What an absolutely crazy film. This film pretty much defines what a Pre-code film is. It was a late night watch and I was just stunned how crazy this film is.

Yes, it was quite something.
Undercurrents of smoldering, interracial sexuality, the oppressiveness of a white colonial administrator, and surreal, rising insanity amongst the heat and assorted dangers of the jungle. Concerning Walter Huston's character, in some ways, one could see him as the precursor for the Colonel Kurtz character of Apocalypse Now.
I am expecting genplant29 to show up here at some point. He often has very insightful things to say about early films such as this.

It's also, a remake of West of Zanzibar. Which was based on a play called Kongo, starring Huston.

Yeah I saw that it is. I'm not sure I'm ready to watch this one again. Amazing film but you just feel dirty when it's over.

it is a great example of pre-code but you have to be in a mood! Pretty grim.
