I can't find anything to suggest a connection to the novel, although it's possible there's some general influence since it's centuries old. It seems more likely that somebody on Cruel Intentions used this movie as inspiration--Ryan Phillipe independently, or maybe his acting coach or the director gave it to him as reference. Sarah Michelle Gellar's character is a lot crueler than the sister here, although the general power dynamic remains, so she doesn't seem to have gotten the same direction/inspiration.
Maybe I'm imagining it, but I really don't think so.
