Discuss Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

As predicted by many, for Marvel it's only a steep downhill from here and it is family friendly Disney to blame. Maybe it will not be reflected in the money at first, but after few years of this type of crap it will hit their pockets as well. I won't go over incredible amount of the flaws, logical inconsistences, bad writing and just old plain stupidity of this movie. Don't have enough time for that. I can only reference the main character of this movie as a clear symptom of all the problems.

Shang-Chi is absolutely dull, bland, superficial and completely uninteresting character. Part of it is because Simu Liu is just bad actor that has no ability to present even remotely credible and believable emotions on his face. This is his movie, he should be the one to carry entire story on his shoulders. But instead he is more of a deadweight that needs to be dragged by combined forces of the secondary characters, without much success.

The other part is really bad writing and editing of this movie, which affects the storytelling. Why do we get to watch almost entire movie until we finally discover the traumatic experience that defined his life - the murder of his mother. This should be among the first things we need to know about him, this is the catalyst event that gives his character the most motivation in his decisions in life. This is what should give him emotional depth and make a proper context to the viewers on everything he did in his life. But instead we only see it much later in the movie after the character was already established as pointless and boring. Wouldn't it be better for a story to know what happened from the start, even briefly, with hints? Wouldn't it be better to understand this character and the psychological burden he carries? And why we never see his first mission in which he kills the head of the gang that ordered to kill his mother? Wouldn't it be better to understand his decision to run away from his father and abandon his sister? Both of these events should be revealed from the start, maybe partially and then uncovering more throughout the movie. But instead we see the murder almost at the end and we never see his first kill. It is clear that Disney decided that showing their main character as a killer and introducing him that way would affect the toys sales and will not sit good with the snowflakes parents that will show this movie to their children. So they decided that the artistic integrity of the story and plot is less important than merchandise. This is why Scorsese was right about Marvel and all their comics movies, it is a marketing tool for selling, not a real cinema.

We are introduced with a character we know nothing about, that shows abilities we don't understand their origin, we are clueless about his motivations and context why he does what he does, the information that is slowly revealed about him is completely cliché, generic and not important to the core events that affected him. And as result we get superficial, uninteresting and completely disconnected character that we don't care about. And when we finally get to that main issues the character is already established, we already have a lot of previous information, so this is just simply not impactful as it needs to be. This should not be a "by the way" information, it should be the head first information for the viewers to dive in and care about him. With better writing and editing this movie could've been a bit better, maybe enough to hide the bad acting, but it would certainly not hide the total lack of charisma of Simu Liu, who is definitely a bad choice. I don't know the future of this character in the MCU, from the mid credits scene the rings can be related to the next big theme in that universe. What I do know is that the only purpose of Shang-Chi is just to add diversity and be in the background role for the future events. He will never get any crucial part or a central role as a mover and shaker. He will just be there, and it's good enough.

Marvel just continues their decline and most of what they do recently is just garbage. They will run on a steam for a while, they will blame the pandemic, but eventually they will run out of excuses. This is what happens when you get big and spread thin, suddenly you get too much people that have no idea what they are doing.
