Discuss The Many Saints of Newark

I watched entire The Sopranos series 3 times over the last 20 years, once during original run and then twice more with few years apart. So obviously I am a fan and this movie is for people like me. It serves my nostalgy, like meeting old friends you haven't seen for a while. But then beyond the sentiment there is a movie, a story. And as such it's not as impressive as I would've want it to be. Michael does a good job mimicking his dad, every little mannerism of a big Gandolfini is recreated carefully to the smallest of the details. The looks, the smiles, the gestures, it's all there. And being only secondary character of the movie helps to keep Tony's memory unspoiled.

But the main story and the characters that drive this movie are not as good as the level of the series we appreciate so much. The movie feels like a one big flashback, hollow and superficial story told by someone like he remembers it. And since all main characters are unfamiliar to us and don't have any meaningful background for the fans, the movie feels exactly like that - hollow and superficial.

And at the end it is exactly like meeting with old friends - you enjoyed the meeting, the nostalgy and "remember when" stories (lol), but after that when you continue with your life you realize that maybe not seeing your "old" friends for a while is actually a good thing.

I finally got to see The Many Saints of Newark yesterday.

I feel that The Many Saints of Newark is to The Sopranos what El Camino is to Breaking Bad:

A movie that we didn't really need, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Mechajutaro, you may be interested to know, if you haven't already seen it, that in The Many Saints of Newark there is an actress named Michela De Rossi who has an absolutely fantastic topless scene (she plays the mistress of one of the mob men). Something we don't get to see nearly as much of anymore in either films or cable TV shows in the last few years, which from what I've read, has been out of an abundance (some would say an overcorrection) of caution as a result of the "Me Too" movement, and also-- unfortunately in my view --because of the pervasiveness of online hardcore pornography.
