Discuss Rambo: Last Blood

As a coworker of mine recently said:

"Sometimes you just want to see shit get blown up."

And you do, in Rambo: Last Blood. It takes awhile to get there, but once you do, there's a generous quantity of real pyrotechnics, quality prosthetics, and general graphically-violent mayhem not watered-down by a studio that thinks it might be "too much" (similarly, this reminds me of many of the films Mel Gibson has starred in during the last ten years or so). SFX were almost all practical, with very little CGI (just like the past Rambo films).

We're following a traditional formula here, where the good guy fights the bad guys to rescue the girl-- which, oddly enough, seems to be an increasingly politically-incorrect thing nowadays.

While Rambo: Last Blood is no cinematic masterpiece, it is enjoyable candy for the brain if you just want to see a traditional, gritty, 1980s-style action movie where the guy rescues the girl (sort of . . . it doesn't happen in a happy Hollywood way) and you get to see "shit get blown up."

The Rambo films ranked, one the best and five the worst, my personal opinion only (I really just didn't care for #5, but that's just me):

1: First Blood, 1982 (Rambo fights Americans)

2: Rambo, 2008 (Rambo fights Burmese)

3: Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1985 (Rambo fights Vietnamese [and a few Russians])

4: Rambo: Last Blood, 2019 (Rambo fights Mexicans)

5: Rambo III, 1988 (Rambo fights Russians)

Nice.

Just got back from watching this... A solid revenge film, the last 20 mins or so was what it was all leading up to - absolute fucking carnage... But it just didn't feel like Rambo... It could have been Stallone as any generic character out to get the Mexican cartel. I get that the character of Rambo has evolved, become more humane and found a kind of peace - which follows well from Rambo 4 - but, I don't know... Maybe it was just the wrong story for Rambo... The ending even tacked on scenes from the previous films - almost to remind the viewer it's a Rambo film... Anyway, I enjoyed it for what it was - Stallone seriously fucking up bad guys in a way that was more violent in a personal way than before... He even seems to enjoy the killing (after blowing a guys head off he then shoots the corpse, unloads a machine gun into 2 men impaled on spikes) ... Which is perhaps more in line with the Rambo from the original book... 9/10

The Rambo franchise is one of my wife and I's guilty pleasures. I completely agree with your ranking, except Last Blood which I haven't seen. You might be the only other person I have heard rank the 2008 Rambo that high besides me. I just loved his character in that movie and of course the haters of the franchise would find plenty in it to ridicule...but me likes what me likes grinning

Bluersun--

I respect your view; this movie definitely has a different "feel" than the other Rambo films; but to me this just demonstrated that John Rambo was old and had lost much of the strength of his youth; and also psychologically his character was just worn out. I actually found this very believable, and am glad Stallone did not try to portray Rambo as being impossibly strong or agile at this late stage of his character's life.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, the 2008 Rambo was pretty good; for me it had a much darker tone than the other Rambo films-- with the notable exception of all the terrible things that happen to his "niece" in the most recent film (you'll find out when you see it) --and the sheer spectacle of those ten minutes or so in the 2008 Rambo where he's just wantonly blasting away at random bad guys with those twin antiaircraft cannons while he's screaming in rage is classic.

Oh I agree with what you said, nobody wants to see Stallone trying to be a 35yo Rambo and it was refreshing to see him portray a physically vulnerable Rambo, taking days to heal from the initial attack... Stopping for a rest in his rocking chair...

I'll always love the first film as not only the best Rambo film, best Stallone film or indeed a great film in it's owb right... So that's my no. 1... 2&3 are great 80s fun action flicks and did what they did... I can't say I love 4 like the rest, the first half is really difficult for me up until Rambo shows up and kills the guards with the bow and arrows - from there on solid action gore fest fun...
