Mum music

We've had a lot of music biopics over the last 10 years or so. From Walk the Line and Control to Bohemian Rhapsody. And they'll all represent the artist's music as if it was revolutionary and life changing or boundary pushing. Like the audience couldn't believe what they were hearing. In Rocketman the music is at one point implied to be so great that it makes the artist and audience fly. And I think this is all becoming a bit of a worn out trope.
And where as I can buy all this if it were a film about The Beatles. I can even buy it if it's about Johnny Cash or Joy Division. But Elton John? Given I've never been a fan of his music, it all sounds rather dull and bland to me, it's mum music. So I'm not an expert on him and I wasn't around in his heyday. But was there actually anything in it that is innovative? That changed music? Because I always assumed he was populist entertainment. Bohemian Rhapsody (the song) may not have been a hit with critics but you can certainly tell that it's unique.
I didn't enjoy Rocketman much but I did think it was better when focusing on the more human elements of John's life rather than the music.

It struck me as an ego trip for EJ more than anything. He gets rich and famous very quickly. Then it's the usual sex, drugs, and rock and roll b.s. His big hit songs. He gets depressed goes into rehab, boo hoo sob story bla bla. Who gives a sh*t or can relate to such self indulgent crap.

The fact that this film isn't a spin off origin story for Tony Todd's character in The Rock is enough reason not to see it.
