Did The Kents pass Clark off as their own child?

Like in John Byrne's MOS where after they find him their farm is snowed in for months. One hint is when young Clark saids to his dad "Can I just keep pretending I'm your son?" but never go into detail on how they adopted him.

i think theyve come up with different ways to explain it. But its usually some form of secret adoption

Like Martha's sister or cousin's kid. Any other cover story than pretending he's their biological son would inquire elaborate fake paperwork and background.
