The Ghostbusters 3 fans wanted to see is long passed because it needed to be made sometime in the early to mid 90's otherwise a new movie wouldn't be a straight sequel, if there were 10, 15 years between Ghostbusters 2 and Ghostbusters 3 you have to say something it, it would be obvious that Ghostbusters 3 isn't a direct continuation of Ghostbusters 2, need to say something about why all the characters 15 years older but 15 years didn't pass 30 years have, so it can't be the original cast because 70 year men wearing proton packs just wouldn't work and a new instalment to the franchise needed young blood.

Reportedly Bill Murray didn't want to do a third movie, he didn't like the scripts GB3(even shredded one of the scripts) and fell out with Harold Ramis during Groundhog Day and didn't reconcile until Ramis became ill and died, o third movie could be greenlit without his involvement because he was a bigger star than the other guys and audience's expectations were demanding that he and everyone else be in it.
