Dunkirk bediscussiëren

I almost walked out. God it was boring. Classic example of style over substance. A mess of a film. Ok I get it Nolan is a "God" and you can't say things like this about his work, but literally if this dingleberry hung from any other arse it would ruin their career

Well seeing on your profile your most watched genre is comedy, why would you watch a serious WWII movie, sorry there wasn't enough potty jokes. All you can refer to is dumps, dicks, and arse's cheers mate stick to potty comedies.

This is the only Nolan movie I like, he ruined Batman IMO

I'd pay to see those dumps in IMAX. Not fraid to say it

LOL, Well played.

I actually like to believe my WWII historical knowledge is well diverse considering the amount of time and study i have put into it. Comedy with gratuitous crudeness is typically a major turn off for me and earns a quick shut off. This film and its subject matter benefited nothing from Nolan's time shifting puzzle gimmicks and his decision to have no main protagonist utterly failed. He also gave no true sense of the scale and scope of the undertaking accomplished by the Britt's.

He believed it would be better to have no main protagonist to tell a story behind, as if to witness the event as a quasi documentary as he saw best to show us would best serve to impact us, yet it only served to remove a viewers empathy, that is unless Han's overhanded score managed to manipulate your feelings and do what Nolan couldn't do with characters. All this movie did was steer our attention to the details of his directing (Choice of camera angles. timeline puzzles, type of film, choice of score, etc). I want to find it hard to be a critic in a film as if to say the events unfolding within each moment on that screen are compelling my interest enough that I am not interested in that minutia. Perhaps upon subsequent viewings i am compelled to learn how i was manipulated so masterfully by the storyteller but on a first viewing i want to be invested in the subject matter.

Not to mention the liberty he took with the fiction inside this historical event was utterly boring. I am reminded of Camerons Titanic. At least the fiction within that historical event was compelling. Tom Harding's character fate, as well as the others, was mute. Without any emotional investment in their arc their is no connection.

Its as if Nolan wanted his fiction within this history not to overshadow the history. Like he tried to strike a balance in the blend of entertainment and education and hoped this would be a compelling film. But here he fails too. Because if you walk away underappreciating the historical event with no compelling interest to revisit it vis-a-vis any form of study then not only do you have boring entertainment but its educational efficacy is nil .

Anyways maybe my Post title should be this film is more frustrating than most of my dumps. Either way crap is crap.

I'm more or less a Nolan fanboy who actually travelled more than a couple hours to see this on a special screen.

...And even I have to admit you have several good points. I'd been looking forward to this for a long time and when it ended I was pretty stunned that's all they did with it. The sound and spectacle was impressive but after that it was very hollow. I'm not sure I'm ready to say I hate it but I'm not impressed to say the least.

The movie leads me to believe they assembled top notch crew, giant IMAX cameras, costumes, sets, Shakespearen actors and when they arrived at the beach they looked at each other: "...I didn't bring the script. I thought you were supposed to bring it!" But they shot a movie anyways. Honestly there was little effort at story or dialogue aside from the title card at the beginning. That was it!

I'll probably see it again and settle on a more definitive opinion but it's hard to imagine I didn't get it the first time.

Hate admitting it, but probably his worst film.

Just because someone prefers comedies, it doesnt mean their opinion on this movie is invalid. I mean, drama is my favorite genre and I found it boring as all hell

I got half way through it and turned it off to go take a dump, which was, indeed, much more interesting than the film.

Really? More interesting than Dunkirk? That's got to be the motherlode of all dumps. It might go viral if you post it on youtube.
