Started out good, but went downhill fast after the alien announces in the fog that he came from the future, that he needs the humans help. For what reason? We are never told, will there be a sequel, nope. Oh course throw in a dying child (typical) and a surprise ending? What sensible person wouldn't figure out who the father would be. Why would she have a child knowing it will die slowly and painfully from cancer. No point to this movie at all.
I suppose making it slow, sad, and with a decent score would appeal to some, me I like a comprehensive movie. If I want emotion, I would watch Manchester by the sea (great movie)

Haha nice Independence Day insult, that movie was a cheesy action flick. I have a list of my fav sci-fis and ID isn't on there. But at least we both agree Arrival had no proper ending.

What are your favorite sci-fis?

Oh sorry I tried to elude to my lists on my channel. I have a "fav sci-fi/cyberpunk" list... but in all fairness it's apples and oranges, Arrival isn't a sci-if it's a mystery drama about a women's life. I love dramas just not Arrival. Tmdb should feature the lists better like IMDb. So what are your fav films or sci-fis? Perhaps make a list I'd love to see...

I should have known you already had some lists posted. You definitely have some great ones in there. I'll have to compose a few lists of my own to post, but looking at your sci-fi/cyberpunk list, i definitely know that 2001: a space odyssey, The Fly (1958 and 1986 versions), Alien, The Thing, The Terminator, Metropolis, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers would make it on my list. Probably a few others as well.

Yup that's why I laughed at the Independence Day insult towards me. Also it would be nice if you could shrink down your replies deleting the numerous history before, only leaving the last comment, that way the threads read quicker and easier. Tmdb needs to fix that somehow

Sorry about that. Is that better? Yeah, I never questioned your taste, it was just one movie we have different opinions on. I loved Arrival, but it isn't my favorite sci-fi movie ever, and it's not as heavy on the sci-fi aspect like other sci-fi films. Thinking of more recent ones in the past few years, I was actually more blown away by Interstellar.

When the sad classical music starts at the start of the film and the camera is slowly zooming in, I made fun of it and started saying something like, "The end times came without warning..." or something, and all my friends burst out laughing. Then 2 seconds later, the lady starts talking exactly the same. If a movie is predictable in the first 5 seconds, that is not a good sign. I thought at that point it would be a crap film, and it was imo, although I actually liked the build up and when they started talking to the aliens and trying to learn the language. But then it all turned to crap by the end, and then ended the way it started with the same cringy cliche.
p.s. Hollywood, as much as I think this is a crazy world, I just don't believe any country would attack aliens like that. Trump might try to fine them for illegal parking, but that's about it.

It's a very dumb movie. Aliens just stay there doing nothing, a lot of ppl trying to understand what's happening and they never react. Then main character tries to communicate and they magically decide to communicate back. Hadn't anybody try before, rly? And it's made worse with the guy talking about using math to talk to them then made look dumb and discarded, a clear reference to the fact that math is the same in the whole universe therefore it's the best way for alien species to communicate. Looks as if story writer did Letters, hated math and loved all those boring old books at school, and decided to put her loved subject into a movie.

I didn't particularly like this movie but ripping on Independence Day as a means of somehow elevating it seems ridiculous.
If I went out to an expensive, renowned restaurant for a meal and found it to be terrible and said so to the person I was with, if they replied - Well, I guess you'd better stick to McDonald's then! That would be plain daft.
Same logic here.

That said, I did find the movie a bit dry. It was at least something a different to the standard "first contact" SF story, though.
