Discuss Dark Phoenix

Raven:" And by the way the women are always saving the men around here. You might want tothink about changing the name to X-Women!"

Ughhhhh......there you are sitting comfortably and trying to enjoy the movie and this awkward and awful piece of dialogue comes up in the first 15 minutes of the movie and you can't help but to think 'Oh, so it's going to be one of those movies is it'. It might've worked if it was delivered in a tongue in cheek manner, but instead they tried making it into a really serious and dramatic conversation where she gets angry and let's Charles Xavier have a piece of her mind. It's just cringeworthy and forced and brings what didn't seem like a very good movie even without it to a screeching halt.

Also that scene where McAvoy calls the president with his private line and some bro on the other end tells him that the line will no longer be in use, and McAvoy desperately tries pleading with him, but the bro just hangs up on him is great unintentional comedy. I don't know why they did their darndest to make Xavier act like some sort of an emasculated eunuch. Hell, the same goes for that Cyclops guy who is pouting in every scene and looks like he is about to cry for some reason. That dude looks like his mind is somewhere else and he is thinking 'I believe a Chanel purse would go really well with this yellow suit!'

I really, really dislike this current era we are living in when it comes to this type of thing. I have not seen the movie, because I am a lifelong X-Men fan, and do not wish to see it being destroyed like this. The last film, Apocalypse was a let down, and I don't think I could take another horrible version of my favorite comic book team.

Since I was a kid, I always have seen the X-Men portrayed as a team of powerful men and women. There is no need for this posturing or dialogue. This is not a women's issue. There was never an issue since when I was a child reading the various bios for each character. Both male and female characters were shown to have superior physical abilities, genius level intellect, and powerful mutant gifts. I never once thought that there was an equality issue, just because of the name "X-Men". This is more of our current state of making something out of nothing. This is seeing a problem or creating a problem when nothing is there.

The entire ethos of this comic book entity is based around people uniting to bring about tolerance and peace in a world that hates them for being different, while dealing with their own fellow marginalized people who want to bring war against that hatred and bigotry. That's why it works. Yes, there are super powers, tight fitting spandex, and general comic book wackiness, but the core of the story (since I have been a big fan) was about injustice and prejudice towards mutantkind. What these kind of writers do is undermine that entire core, by trying to make the X-Men cause about something else.

What's next, do we change the word "humankind" to "womankind" or "humanity" to "huwomanity" in order to try to further this agenda? Or does it make more logical sense to simply understand that a word itself is not inherently put in place to be "offensive"? X-men = men + women. Why does this even need to be explained?

The film sucked, stop obsessing over minutiae.

So I am in the minority here and liked Dark Phoenix but you are right, this line seemed really forced and if you think about it, out of place in context of her argument. Definitely thrown in because of current issues. Shame because I did like the whole relationship dynamic between Prof X and Mystique within the series.
