I was intrigued when I heard that Guy "I was married to Madonna and lived to talk about it" Ritchie was making a movie version of the 1960's tv spy series. I only saw the show in reruns in the 1970's, but I liked it, and David McCullum was really cute.
I did get a bit worried when I read that Ritchie wasn't too enamored with the show, but wanted to make an origin story. It turned out great. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer were good as Napoleon Solo and Illuya Kurachin are great, Alicia Vikander was cool, and last but not least, my hunny-bunny Hugh Grant as Alexander Waverley was, well, very Hugh Grantish. I recommend it.

The casting was great, and the story was entertaining.
They're talking about a sequel, even though it was not the huge Box Office success they hoped for.

I remember the old Man from Uncle tv series and loved it. In saying that I really enjoyed this movie too. The Macgyver remake not so much.

i just wish they'd start shooting this on film... would really work aesthetically...
armie hammer was surprisingly good in this... didnt expect that... cavill & vikander are solid as usual...
also, i loved the innuendo throughout the movie... lots of fun... and it worked...

@ausfem and @Renovatio : I really hope that the sequel is as good as this one was. I especially can't wait to see Hugh Grant play Waverley again!

Ritchie did a MUCH better job creating an entertaining movie here than did Wright when he foisted "Baby Driver" on us.
I wasn't expecting greatness, just good fun and decent action. Mission Rather Accomplished, if I do say so. Compared to the dreadful "Salt," which I viewed for the 1st time recently out of sheer curiosity, "The Man from UNCLE" is quite the Xmas cracker.

@BluHex : I quite liked Salt, but I totally agree about TMFU. I can't wait for the sequel!

I recently heard about Cavil and Ritchie teaming up again for The Ministry For Ungentlemanly Warfare so I thought I'd give this another watch. It's a shame it didn't do better financially - I think a sequel would have been good but ah well.

I thought it was an entertaining spy caper but an awful U.N.C.L.E. movie.
