Discuss Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Ok, so first of all I got to say that nothing's gonna change my love for this film, it still making Glenn cry when I is watching it and Spock is deading and he go "you is always going to be my friend " so sad cry

But I is watching today and I see Kirk no raise up his shields even though cheers lady say you got to raise shields - so why he no do? If he do NO ONE die at all! He worried about look cool maybe? No much sense cause other ship no talking anyways and starfleet say raise shields! It's a mistake by captain kirk is it?

You spoiled the most important event of the film for those who haven't seen it but read your post.

Surely a 36 year old film that has these events addressed in the sequel from 34 years ago doesn't need a spoiler alert...?

WRONG!

I thought that since Khan had the same grade of ship as Kirk, if Kirk raised his shields, Khan would know. Kirk wanted to take Khan by surprise when the Enterprise fired at his ship, so he waited...

Because we are all one big happy fleet.

Hello my friends it is me Glenn!

I is the so glad you been discuss the wrath of khan. It definitely number one star trek film. Nothing's gonna change my love for the wrath of khan that is for sure but yes it sure no make the sense there. That about khan would know by satch I am no think it's right. Because what difference it make? If no bad man and they no know it khan for sure then it a starfleet ship which broken or something and no matter if they raise the shield because like cheers lady say you is supposed to do. Kirk no know it khan there so he should do that no? It just no make sense it drive me crazy!

Hi Glenn for a moment I was afraid you were actually going to sing smile Welcome to our merry band of Trek misfits you can find most of wandering around the Star Trek movies and various Star Trek series boards (The Original Series (1966-1969) being the most popular.board ) vulcan_tone3

A couple of things. First, I don't think spoiler warnings are necessary for anything over 6 months old. If you haven't seen it, then go watch it first. Warnings during the first six months make sense. After, you're just being lazy.

No. First the other ship was not the same class as the Enterprise. It was a smaller ship with fewer capabilities. And any starship can tell if another has raised their shields. Kirk didn't raise the shields because it was a Federation vessel. Without cause why would he. Yes, regulations require him to do so since he's not getting any communications. And he certainly had no intention of firing at it. But I can see him believing there is some mechanical problem rather than a hijacked ship.

The post of mine you are responding to is very old (over a year old). Since I still haven't seen the film in many years, I will admit to trying to respond from memory and to being wrong. Thank you for your correction, Costumers.

Aaaaaaaarrrrrhhhhhh! Kirk you just raise shield! Why no? Federation regulation is reason there no? It make no sense say Kirk just think mechanical problem so no bother. If rules say you gonna raise shield you gonna raise them. Other captain no offense because he no that too. He no fall out Kirk or something. It really make no sense. Die for Kirk reason make no sense!

It makes complete sense. In practice, only newbies insist on rigid adherence to 'the rules', with experience, you come to rely on your own judgement.

Kirk has a long history of ignoring regulations and it has always worked out fine. The ship was a federation ship which Kirk had no reason to believe might be hostile, because "we are all one happy fleet", so Kirk did what he always did and relied on his own judgement. This one time relying on his own instinct didn't work out.

Why he no raise shields is big big mystery.

No it isn't

Hello again my friend! I is still say no it no making sense. It no Kirk in big battle no do what supposed. It just Kirk with other Federation ship. If he think no work properly he just follow regulation no losing his face no one thinking Kirk no good. It just what you do. Like make Captain log!

He only go ignore regulation of he think something wrong but no think anyway because we all happy one fleet. That why it no making sense. If he no thinking happy fleet yes Kirk go do own think and that making the sense but he is!
