Il ricchissimo industriale John Hammond è riuscito a costruire un parco dei divertimenti a tema incentrato sui dinosauri (riportati in vita grazie ad una complessa operazione di ingegneria genetica), il "Jurassic Park". Hammond invita alcuni esperti e scienziati a compiere un sopralluogo nell'isola dove il parco è allestito e a stilare una perizia positiva che gli permetta di ottenere i finanziamenti di cui ha bisogno. Ma qualcosa va storto: a causa di una tempesta, il sistema di controllo computerizzato del parco va fuori uso, i dinosauri rompono i recinti in cui sono rinchiusi e impazzano liberi dando la caccia agli umani...

Durante una spedizione di paleontologia lungo il Rio delle Amazzoni, un gruppo di scienziati si imbatte in una laguna rimasta immutata sin dalla preistoria. In questa laguna si nasconde una minaccia, Gill-Man, un ibrido metà pesce e metà uomo. Gli scienziati riescono a catturare il mostro solamente dopo che egli ha ucciso alcuni membri dell'equipaggio, ma riesce comunque a scappare. Nonostante l'opposizione del finanziatore della spedizione (che vedeva una possibilità di arricchimento) decidono che la soluzione migliore è quella di fuggire ma l'unica uscita dalla laguna è stata bloccata da alcuni tronchi messi dal mostro. Mentre l'equipaggio tenta di rimuovere l'ostacolo, il mostro fa ritorno e rapisce Kay. Una volta ritrovato il mostro gli scienziati fanno fuoco, uccidendolo. Il film termina con un'inquadratura del corpo apparentemente senza vita del mostro
