On the eve of her 70th birthday, Canadian writer Margaret Atwood set out on an international tour criss-crossing the British Isles and North America to celebrate the publication of her new dystopian novel, The Year of the Flood. Rather than mount a traditional tour to promote a book's publication, Atwood conceived and executed something far more ambitious and revelatory--a theatrical version of her novel. Along the way she reinvented what a book tour could (and maybe should) be. But Atwood wasn't selling books as much as advocating an idea: how humanity must respond to the consequences of an environmentally compromised planet before her work of speculative fiction transforms into prophesy.

A short film that weaves together original and archival material to create an ethereal narrative texture, Black Saltwater Elegy intimately links the discordant threads of a popular history of dispossession (Africville) with the solitude of its protagonist's graveyard-shift fantasies. After opening with disquieting archival footage of the demolition of Africville, the film shifts to an austere observational portrait. A palatable sense of the duration of midnight work slowly shifts into subtle gestures that hint towards choreographed events. Eventually, a breech occurs as the protagonist fuses with an emergent dreamscape, where ruined landscapes and a resurrection of an extinct community intertwine. Using the protagonist's disembodied point-of-view, the audience floats above a reconstructed Africville, one forever present, nesting in a bed of saltwater fog.

Revolving around a teen drop-in center called Planet Youth, the film explores the pain of stereotypes, the importance of peer support, and the ambivalence towards identity experience by a group of First Nations teens in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Begun as a participatory photography group self-portrait, the film expands to capture the youths' difficult challenges with racism, abuse, and foster care, while exploring the teens' resilient playfulness and why they are a "street family." For Our Street Family provides the opportunity to finally listen to a group parented by bureaucracy and ignored by the public.

Today, there are aboriginal communities across the country that are making a difference. "A Life Worth Living" looks at the suicide issue amongst First Nations from a historical and cultural perspective and presents positive examples of native-run programs. We see aboriginal groups who incorporate traditional teachings and cultural values, raise suicide awareness through a cross-country walk, create youth programs and training the trainer workshops. Produced by three-time winners of the American Indian Film Festival, "A Life Worth Living" is a powerful film that raises awareness about suicide, is hopeful, presents solutions without preaching, and generally brings this sensitive topic out into the open where it can be looked at with a clear vision.

People have called them "village idiots", "imbeciles", "fools", "subhumans" and "retards". They have been incarcerated in prisons and institutions, abused and even at times murdered. They have been feared and misunderstood for centuries. This program chronicles the incredible struggles of a culturally diverse group of Canadian people with intellectual disabilities and their families to be recognized and treated as fully human with the same rights as anyone else in society.
