Discuter de His Dark Materials : À la croisée des mondes

I remember watching the Golden Compass movie and liking it, although I am not familiar with the original books. So I was expecting to see a high quality HBO production about fantasy world and submerge into this adventure. Unfortunately this show is embarrassingly bad. Not sure how this even passed pilot stage without sacking the show runners and half of the cast.

The writing is extremely weak, many dead moments are overly melodramatic and meaningless conversations between unimportant secondary characters. The main focus of the world building is based on tedious and boring parts surrounding annoying characters that float on the surface and have absolutely no depth and no possible direction of development. The show is a mess of plot lines, bad dialogs and cringe moments in which nothing important or interesting happens, and if something does happen there is absolutely no build up and no explanation how this came to be.

The main heroine Lyra is payed by Dafne Keen, that maybe got noticed in that Wolverine movie where she was mostly silent. But here where she needs to talk and lead this messy story she is clearly not up to the job and only makes it worse. The way she says "Roger" all the time, referring to her abducted friend, makes me want to throw something heavy on my TV screen. She is clearly very simple one trick actress that cannot possibly hold the expectations to bring some complexity to the character. I don't think she will have a career in Hollywood when she grows up. And all other supporting characters feel superficially heavy and unreal, like they were given one single characteristic only and have no other parts of a real person.

All of this creates pointless and unwatchable show with incredibly stupid story and annoying characters. I gave it a chance but I don't see any possible way this show can improve.

Mostly agreed, being on the verge of quitting myself. I think just out of curiosity I'll watch the 1st season all the way through... but yeah, the show fails in almost all departments, except for the acting and production value.

Lyra I have no problem with - although the way she pronounces "Roger" and her intonation in certain scenes can be very annoying, but the actress does a moderately good job with the material given. As do all other actors, so I'd lay the blame on the writers and the directors of the episodes. This is supposed to be a rich fantasy universe, as you mention, and given the timeframe of the 1st season, I expected it to be more detailed and fleshed out. But - and I completely agree with this part of your post - we spend time on melodrama and bad dialog. And this is where I'm stumped: the source material is supposed to be a good book, and either the book itself is not that good, or they completely botched the adaptation. Neither version is flattering for HBO...

The pacing is horrendous, except for maybe the first one, every episode felt somehow... off. Also, the SFX is all over the place (75% of the time the daimons are not on screen at all!), and witch they have on their side is clearly OP, and provides an easy out for the writers for every situation our main characters might encounter in the future. She'll just show up from nowhere and save the day... Boring.

Considering this is an adaptation of Miltons" paradise lost" for youth/teens with much much further to go - I would reserve judgement.

You know LYRA is biblical eve?

I can't remember if I reached as far as episode 5 when I quit this.

I don't remember it being particularly better or worse than the film adaptation or any issue with the acting as such but the problem was budgetary - specially they clearly didn't have the money to CGI all the characters daemons in all the scenes. They were pretty obviously missing half the time and it eventually just bugged me too much.

Pretty much a fundamental aspect of the novels, so it became pretty much impossible to buy into this show.
