Discuss Marvel's Runaways

So far it's mainly a teen mystery of the kids trying to find out what's going on with their parents, and no one has runaway yet. Interesting, but still waiting to see where this is going an how this connects with the rest of the MCU and how Tina Minoru went from defender of the Hong Kong Sanctum (in Doctor Strange) to a member of the Pride. So far there are only a few changes from the comics in story, and the actors look like the characters they portray. Old Lace looks good, but sometimes appears obviously CG as expected from a TV budget. My only criticism is that so far it's been a lot less snarky then the comics portray (and expected in an ABC produced series), and awaiting for the show to up their snark game. Are they doing 3 episodes a week or 1 a week after a 3 episode debut?

Well the final episodes battle was action-less, but at least the kids finally run away. From what I hear, it was Hulu themselves that requested the show focus on the parents more than the kids. Brian K Vaughn himself said he wanted the show to focus on the parents more as he didn't have the opportunity to do so in the comics since he was always trying to rush the story along due to the fear of cancelation. It's a wonder why these producers also didn't seem to have any fear of cancellation themselves as they end it as if expecting an automatic renewal. Maybe they will, and it'll be a shame if they don't as they will have listened to advice from the same people that cancels them. Maybe Disney being Hulu's future owners will allow for another season, and Disney will have better advice for the showrunners.

The series has been great. Obviously it will get a renewal, why wouldn't it? The only Marvel series which is not ever getting a renewal is Inhumans, and that should never have been a thing anyway. The show runners had a vision and know what they are doing. I think the series has been paced very well. And focussing on the adults gives it a broader appeal than just the teen demographic. If you think this series moves too slow, you should try watching a Marvel Netflix series.

My problem with the pacing is that some of the things that happened should have happened earlier and we got a better resolution at the end, more of a fight as expected for any series. The season was mainly setup for the next season. They setup Karolina could fly, its never used since and not used at all in the finale. They setup the dinosaur, but the dinosaur was taken out in the first second of the final battle. All their powers were negated in the first minute, and the staff of one taken away before it was used by Nico in spite of the buildup of her training with it. The series got me hyped for the finale, but that was a dud. This kind of setup storytelling is what usually happens in a second season of a series, which I hate when they do that. How little budget do they have with the series? It must have been expensive to shoot in L.A. as every Marvel Netflix series has shown better action and effects then this show has displayed, even Agents of Shield has better fights. What disappointed me most is that they made Alex a non-contributing member of the team, in the comics he's a better tactician it's his one job to be the man with the plan, but we're left with the question...what did he really bring? When the second season occurs (which HULU just announced it will ), I hope it has a tighter structure and a better payoff (and not just be a setup for season 3 just as this one was just a setup of season 2).

BTW, I watch everything comic book related.

The Dinosaur looked great. I don't remember there actually being any effects in any of the Netflix series. Iron Fists glowing fist aside, which looked horrible. The Defenders also looked way cheaper than this series.

Iron Fist himself had problems with choreography due to Finn Jones not having enough skill and time to practice the action scenes. He's just not gifted in picking up choreography like that. However, Jessica Henwick's (Colleen Wing) fight scenes were amazing. Finn Jones got better in Defenders (as he was given more time to practice). Agent's of Shield has show phenomenal action and effect shots.

In Runaways the spell duel between Jonah and Karolina was a cliché shot and looked awful (many other movies and shows have done the exact same thing, but better). The truck falling down the well was laughable (even for TV standards). I admit the dinosaur looks great, it looks like it's the one thing probably taking up most their budget.

Agents of Shield is the Marvel TV flagship series, and it's on ABC not Hulu. And they generally don't have effects in every episode. Also, the second season of Agent Carter had terrible effects. Much worse than anything on this show. Most of the effects on this show looked like TV effects. Since I expect TV effects when watching a TV series, it didn't bother me. And the Dinosaur looking believable was the most important thing, which they got spot on. I'd rather that they had mediocre effects instead of butchering the story and characters in order to avoid having to do effects at all.

Like Inhumans for example. They took Medusa, whose whole defining feature is her hair, and cut it off. They took Space based Superhumans, and transplanted them to Hawaii. And the writing and acting was horrible to boot.

Runaways has a good cast, and actors well cast in their respective roles. A lot of the adult actors are very good, and most of the kids too. Especially the Japanese girl. It's not an action series, so I don't expect them to spend huge amounts of money on choreography and effects.

That's my main problem with it. It's not an action series, it should be. As a Marvel TV Series action is kinda expected.

I think it's okay. Almost done with season 1. I'm a moderate Marvel fan. Personally, I haven't liked any of the Netflix Marvel series. However, I have a week spot for teen dramas, so I decided to give this a try. It has it's moments, but it has yet to really pull me in. I don't feel a strong connection with the characters or plot line. I also feel like it should be a bit more exciting. It definitely moves faster than the other Marvel shows, but I still feel like they can afford to pick up the pace here.

I just watched the 1st episode and of all the things I was expecting, my biggest surprise was not the jettisoning of Vaughan's natural, self aware dialogue or any of the other flaws I had anticipated, but how cheap it looked. And i don't mean in a cool indie Memento/Trainspotting kind of way. I mean in a bargain bin straight-to-dvd, ultra TV movie kind of way. Yes a lot of network tv shows look cheap but this made the likes of Agents of Shield and The Gifted look like multi-million dollar blockbusters.

I'm talking technical aspects such as lighting and shooting material. It looks like a soap opera. I'm quite baffled by the decision as if you get license for a Marvel property, surely you would want to splash out a bit and give it some kind of credibility. Yet it feels like they have no confidence in the project.

While strangely, there does seem to be a bit of care and effort put into the actual making of it. The set design looks pretty good. The camera movements, framing and editing all seem like there is a bit more creativity involved than the likes of Arrow or Agents of Shield, shows that basically involve the actors standing bolt upright and spouting their dialogue as the camera frames them with absolutely no imagination as they woodenly spout their vacuous, sleep-inducing lines. Though these shows do look glossier. And this is what I expected of Runaways: a glossy, heavily sanitized version of the comic.

Yet even more oddly, the special effects do look pretty good for this kind of tv show. We only glimpsed the dinosaur in the 1st episode, but I didn't question it. It looked pretty good. So why have they clearly spent so little on the general look of the show?

And as far as the show as a whole goes, despite many of the changes, I don't hate it as much as i thought I would. A wasted opportunity of a great property for sure. But it's not unwatchable.
