I saw the trailer of second season and found it pretty interesting. Do I need to watch season 1 first or can I directly start with season 1?

The series is pretty hard to follow as it is with all the economic jargon. If your quizzed up on that kind of thing then... maaybe.
Why would you want to do that anyway?

Well yes, I recently started watching first season on Hotstar. Initially I had started with the first episode of second season but as you said, I didn't catch around it, as I had no clue about the backdrop and the storyline. So yeah, I stopped it there and started with the first season and I've to say, it's amazing so far! Especially Damian Lewis' performance as Bob Axelrod is just brilliant! Enjoying it!
