Discuss Supergirl

Just watched the first two episodes and I did not like it at all. It was complete episodes filled with lectures and speeches on bigotry and showing people consumed with hate and violence against aliens. I guess to make statements on immigration and how horrible and racist us Americans are. If I wanted this crap I’d flick on cnn. If they want to make a few speeches about this stuff I can live with that. Just don’t make entire episodes and plot lines surrounding it. That is not entertaining to me at all

Isn't the opposite true though - sure this shows that there are intolerant people who could rather kill aliens than interact with them through existential fear - but it also shows that not all (or even most) are like that - and that we shouldn't have to tolerate intolerance (as oxymoronic as that may seem!).

Just because you are American densest automatically make you intolerant or terrible - there is plenty of similar rhetoric in Europe and all over the world that other viewers will identify with.

II'll agree it is very much not subtle, and I do like a bit of escapism too - but if it makes us a little uncomfortable and question ourselves over these issues then I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

Thank you for the response Joe grinning

Yes I agree that it shows that not all people are intolerant, but the message they are sending is that ones that are for illegal immigration or morally superior and the ones that aren't are a bunch of intolerant bigots. Regardless of what is happening in Europe, this is specifically about America on this show. It's not like they're making specific arguments on the pros and cons of illegal immigration. They are making a correlation between aliens from other planets and illegals in the USA so by definition it has to be a very general argument because the scenario is not the same.

I don't see how this is going to make people stop and think and question themselves about whether or not they are a racist from watching these episodes. This is not going make people want to change their minds on their position, but rather make them want to change the channel. Anybody can turn on cable news 24 hours a day and here both sides of the immigration debate. The point is, that it is not entertaining in the least to be preached to and given a heavy dose of partisan politics for an entire season. It's the fact that it's pushing political ideology that takes priority over giving the viewers a compelling story that would entertain them is the worst part of this.

I think the better question is why should we tolerate endless social/political coercion every single place we go nowadays? Whether we tolerate the intolerance of intolerating blah blah! We are never given an AWAY from all of this tired crap today. Like anything else, there is a time and place for everything.

No one is tuning into a TV show, especially what is clearly popcorn escapist entertainment like superhero stuff, to think about or deal with this stuff. Prostate cancer and female genital mutilation are realities, but must we have to hear about it on a show where a pretty blonde girl flies around the air fighting aliens from other planets? We are never given a chance to put any of this stuff down, and ironically, it's only making people more intolerant and sick of all of these social/political issues.

Apparently Wall Street is becoming more reluctant to hire females in the wake of the #metoo movement, and I say...GOOD! Be careful what you wish for. You can only relentlessly pound people in the ass for so long before people wind up saying, "you know what? FUCK OFF ALREADY!"

That’s my biggest gripe with tv shows of today. I am afraid to watch new shows these days. They’re very smart about it too. They wait till they hook you and then plant a political message here and there and then bam. They hammer you with this crap. And the producers of these shows are actually arrogant enough to think they’re doing a service by “educating the people”. I’m sure somebody here will chime in and say “if you don’t like it don’t watch”. They just don’t get it. It’s at the point where you can’t escape it no matter what shows you watch and it’s infesting the genres that I like the most. I’m hearing even video games are pushing politics.

Thing is every story is political - it just might not describe politics that resonate with you or the current zeitgeist.

As we grow older and more experienced and the world grows smaller in terms of news and information flow there is less and less that we will recognise as apolicital. So if there's one thing we should probably learn to tolerate its that lol.

No, there may be things that have an element of something that could be political, but for the majority of my life I have never seen blatant and specific political agendas fed to an audience like is done now in so many aspects of entertainment

No it is NOT!!! We actually were getting almost none of this crap until Trump got elected. Rather than simply admit defeat, the left is now looking to smear its agenda into every facet of life, basically further showing why Trump got elected and it was so important he did.

Today's left is not promoting liberal values, it's promoting unnatural top-down control of EVERYTHING! I used to be a lot more liberal, but seeing how all these groups try to hijack and sabotage everything the moment they feel they're not getting their way makes me want to see them all abolished.

A good example is the falling out from Jeremy Jordan merely singing about how Kara and Lena are just friends. It was any old random improv, yet all these gay kids got in a lame tizzy over it and are outraged. All of thes groups always want to get their way, to the exclusion of everyone and everything else. It's getting to the point where they should be, and will be, utterly ignored.

Also, all these shows and sporting events are suffering HUGE drops in viewership. Yet like the stubborn control freaks they are, they simply slog on anyway as though it's not an indication of distaste for constant social/political browbeating. It's clear at least part of why Supergirl is not more successful is because they insist on continuing to foist this tired crap into the show. They are converting no one, yet are pissing a whole lot of people off, many of whom are now turning away and tuning out.

I agree that there are some over entitled individuals like the example you gave (I don't know anything about Jeremy Jordan or the response he got - but I do know many shippers are nuts rabidly defending their private offshoot fantasy) - but these are internet idiots. A minority - if not merely individuals. I wont deny that some of these tiny groups do take the quest for equality and inclusion too far and end up subverting their own cause by creating an exclusive bubble for themselves - but this is absolutely not most people who are in a some minority or another.

I think more attention has been drawn to storylines highlighting the politics of the day or plight of minorities - and perhaps even more since trump - but they have always existed in one form or another. Ironically I really feel that the majority of this extra attention has been drawn by the people who identify themselves as having right wing political beliefs. If people didn't whine about TV they dont like and simply stopped watching then unpopular shows will just go away.

WB / hollywood / FOx/ whoever don't give a flying shit about politics any farther than how it affects their profit margins / tax implications - the idea that there is some sort of collective Communist media Illuminati forcing an agenda on the masses is blatantly absurd. What exactly is this "agenda" asking us to do that's so abhorrent? Be nice to people who are different from us? Show compassion for the less fortunate? Communicate and mediate instead of blame? Are you forced to watch shows you don't like clockwork orange style or can you just turn over?

I just don't see any of these shows as an issue - just people from all across the political spectrum finding offence for the sake for being offended and crying about it on the internet. It ALL deserves to be ignored and frankly I'm slightly embarrassed to have been drawn into this.

I was waiting for the “if you don’t like it stop watching” response. As I suspected, you just don’t get it

Actually they do force us to watch it. Maybe not clockwork orange style but close enough. I gave up on Supergirl last season and now I have to download the crossover episode.

I love this movie...

I finally gave up on Supergirl, 2 months ago. I couldn't take the preaching any longer. I'll only watch for the crossovers.

I don’t blame you. I found this season to be really challenging to get through. They have backed off a bit on the political crap in the second half of the season at least. But they need to do better overall

Can SOMEBODY put Ben Lockwood out of his misery. PLEASE! He's so obsessed and one dimensional it's a headache to watch him on screen.

I feel like I needed to be put out of my misery after watching this season.
