Discuss Life Below Zero

I do enjoy watching these wilderness shows. I used to watch one about a family living in Alaska, don't recall the name now.

But I have noticed something about them. The writers have these people create mini crises which otherwise would not occur. For instance, in season 1 episode 2 "Hunt, Barter, and Steal" the husband in one family narrates to the cameraman a crisis he has just discovered. He is out of dog food. He looks in the bucket and is surprised to discover that he is down to the last meal for his dog team. So he has to call for an emergency plane to drop dog food at his home, which will be very expensive. Of course this drives home the point that the family is isolated in the wilderness and can't just run out to the store and buy some dog food. The man said he miscalculated the amount of dog food to bring home on his last trip. And he has only just discovered his mistake that day, as he gives the dogs the last of the food. This is so fake. There is no way that guy didn't notice he was getting low on food before he got down to the last of the food. Just like any farmer or other person living in a rural setting with livestock they feed, he would be have been aware that the dog food supply was getting low long before he got down to the last half a bucket of dog food. I know why the writers do this; they want to emphasize the isolation of those living in wilderness areas and the problems they face in getting supplies. But it is for exactly these reasons that such people keep an eye on their supplies. These people don't suddenly discover they are low on supplies just as they run out. They KNOW how much trouble it is to get supplies into their remote locations. Most of them can tell you without checking about how many months, weeks, or days worth of animal feed they have in their storehouses.

The excuse given in the show is that the man bought a new type of dog food that year, higher quality stuff, and he didn't realize he wasn't buying enough food. But that is nonsense. He would have known he was getting low on food long before he actually ran out of it.
This is just Hollywood creating a crisis for the show. Of course the man went along with the script they gave him, because like the others in the show, he makes money by participating in the show. So he pretended not to notice he was running out of dog food until he got down to the amount for the last feeding. LOL
