Discuss The Originals

Well we already know that Hope will be saved. The previews for the sequel give that away. I had predicted that Klaus and Elijah would sacrifice themselves to save her. But now it looks as though it will be only Klaus. But maybe not. Somehow I think Elijah and Hayley will hook up, and since she is in the hereafter, does that mean Elijah will die also?

I think Marcel and Rebecca will hook up somehow finally. I think Klaus will give his blessing to them finally during his farewell tour.

I think the witches will be done for. I think the old prophesy that Hope would spell their end will come true.

OK, what does everyone else think?

Well Klaus and Elijah died together at the end, in keeping with the devotion they always had for each other. Ever since the siblings took the Hollow's dark magic into themselves to save baby Hope I figured they would eventually have to die in order to save her. It turns out only one had to die, and Elijah simply decided he had lived long enough and had completed his purpose. Klaus had finally found peace and love through his daughter. He repented of his harsh treatment of his siblings (Perhaps he also wanted to ensure that he would never have to make an appearance in "Legacies". That would be understandable. In the Klaus and Hope scene it was painfully apparent that I was watching a young girl trying to act sad. I don't mean to be unkind to the young actress playing Hope so I debated whether to mention this but decided to. I doubt she reads this discussion board. I guess she will develop a greater range of emotional expressions as she develops into her role, but in this scene she mostly used that one sad expression.)

I figured Klaus would give his blessing to Marcel and Rebecca and make up with his family. Check and check.

I liked the table scene with Marcel and the family eating, drinking, laughing, and sharing memories. It looked almost like the group of actors were sitting there for a farewell dinner, sharing memories of their years making the series. 'Klaus' looked to be relaxed, happy, and genuinely laughing.

But here is a question: doesn't the death of the brothers mean the end of all the vampires in their sire lines? Certainly Marcel should be dead and gone now. The writers decided to ignore that issue entirely in the hopes that viewers wouldn't think of it either.

I was surprised that there was no nod to life after death for the brothers. Was that because they were technically already dead? Not long ago we saw a segment in which Hayley asked Hope to tell Elijah that he still owed her a dance. I kind of thought they would hook up in the spiritual dimension.

Klaus' sire line was broken by Davina back in season 3 (I think it was season 3, it was in 2016) & Elijah's sire line was broken in season 4 I believe.

I liked the finale for the most part, except for the rushed feeling & Klaus' death of course. But the very end with the brothers turning into 'fairy dust' was a bit weird. I did shed a few tears. Sad to see it's all over. I suppose I'll have to find something else to replace it.

This line from your post made me laugh:

"Perhaps he also wanted to ensure that he would never have to make an appearance in "Legacies". That would be understandable."

I've been binging the series recently. There are several relationships featured in the series including Klaus with Cami, Marcel with Rebecca, (Marcel with several women, but the main 'ship is with Becca) Josh and Aiden, Davina and her violin playing friend, Elijah with Hayley (main ship), Hayley with Jack, and Freya with Keelin.

I've been trying to figure out if there are longer kissing scenes with the gay characters than the straight characters, or if it just seems that way to me.
It seems like for the most part the romance between Klaus and Cami, Elijah and Hayley, is done through longing looks, closeness which flirts with contact, and so on, but very little actual kissing. I don't recall any extended kissing scenes with Marcel right now either.

But with Josh and Aiden there is quite a bit of mouth to mouth tongue hockey type kissing, and to a slightly lesser extent the same with Freya and Keelin.
I think I am right about this. But I wonder if it just seemed like the gay kissing scenes were so much longer to me because guy kissing guy scenes kind of weird me out. (Girl with girl scenes don't affect me the same way). It's not that I am anti-gay, it just weirds me out. I have mentioned this before and someone said I was prejudiced against gays. That's not it. I mean, I know that my grandparents loved each other and I know they kissed each other, but it weirds me out to think of seeing them actually doing it. -It's a very similar feeling. It's fine for them to do that, but ee gads, I don't want to watch it.

So I am now wondering if maybe there were longer kissing scenes with Klaus and Cami, and Elijah and Hayley, or Marcel and Becca (and his other love interests) but I didn't notice how long they went on because they didn't make me feel funny the way watching Josh and his boyfriends kissing does.
Nah, I think the guy guy kissing scenes went on a little longer than the others, and there were more of them than Klaus, Elijah, and Marcel's scenes with their women.

Any thoughts?

Haley & Elijah had quite a few 'kissing' sessions that led to other things. Although there seemed to be passion there to me it looks forced, especially with Mr. Gillies (he always looks so stiff). Here is one scene from season 4:

Right, I know they had kissing scenes like this and they hooked up here. But the scene here is mostly talking, with two very short kissing bits, and then fast forward stripping to underwear and jumping in bed. I recall a lot of kissing scenes with Josh and Aiden where the actual kissing seemed to go on a lot longer. I mean it SEEMED to go on longer. I haven't timed these things or anything. I'm not that hung up on it.

Anyway that's why I wondered to myself if their scenes only just SEEMED longer to me because they give me the willies. Maybe they were not really that much longer at all and it only seemed that way to me.

Or maybe they had extended kissing scenes because the writers didn't want to show them stripping off their clothes and jumping into bed like Elijah and Hayley did here. Like, instead of showing the boys jumping into bed in their underwear they just had them kiss longer.

I don't know. I know this is a very trivial thing. I am an older guy. And as I was binge watching the show again I started wondering if it only seemed that way because of how weird it makes me feel to watch guys kissing. I figure most people on this site are probably younger than me and I just wanted a younger point of view on it. So thanks for yours.

Man, it really sucks that they ended the show and replaced it with a teenie bopper high school targeted show. It's been too long since I was that age and I just can't get into that much silly drama. I will probably go back and watch the first two or three seasons again. I didn't like it as much when they introduced The Hollow, which was the beginning of the end for the show, setting up the chain of events that led to the end. When the four of them were forced to split up, each with a portion of the Hollow magic, I figured that eventually it would lead to them sacrificing themselves to save Hope. I sort of thought it would be all four of them back then. As you said, the show could not go on too long because the actors would begin showing signs of aging, and vampires don't age.

If you find a new show of this genre you think is worth a look, please post a reply about it here. It's been nice talking about the show with you.

Same here. But I'll bet I am older than you.

If you have cable there are probably a lot of shows that you might like, I no longer have cable so I'm stuck watching 'regular' TV. Do you watch Supernatural? If not you should give it a go. How about Lucifer, I thought it was fun but I didn't watch it regularly (it was on at the same time as another show I watch)? I read that Netflix picked it up for a 4th season.

I will give them a try. I do have Netflix and prefer to watch shows there, when I can. Netflix presently has all but the last season of The Originals.

I was without cable or Internet for quite a while. I don't have an antennae so I had no TV. I just read books during that time period. It was probably much better for me in many ways. I read all 6 volumes of Winston Churchill's account of the Second World War, which gave the British story during the 1930s through the end of WWII. I thought it would be very dry reading, and some sections were. But mostly it was very interesting and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading those volumes. I learned a great deal. It helped fill in gaps in my understanding and knowledge of that war and that time period. Churchill tried to get Britain to rearm, to build an airforce, and he warned of the dangers he saw brewing in Germany. He published articles in publicly read periodicals to try to inform the public and build support. But he was unsuccessful in that effort. When Germany attacked them, Britain only held off the German assault on their homeland because of some trickery which convinced Hitler that they had a lot of planes in reserve at a point in time when they were barely able to put up an air defense anymore. Also, before that, Hitler changed his tactics from bombing British air fields and hangers to bombing cities. That happened because a German bomber got off track and mistakenly bombed London instead of the military target he was tasked to bomb. Britain responded by bombing a German city, can't recall but I think they tried to bomb Berlin in retaliation. That infuriated Hitler and made him change tactics, which spared the airfields and planes for a while. Those mistakes helped Britain survive the "Battle of Britain". The US began helping Britain more and more, sending supplies and "loaning" them ships, despite the reticence of the American public to become involved in the conflict.

Churchill and Roosevelt had become friendly prior to the war and prior to Churchill replacing Neville Chamberlain. They continued talking to each other via cables sent via the underwater cable which stretched from the US all the way to Great Britain. That personal communication and the relationship they already had contributed a great deal to the American response concerning shipping supplies to Britain prior to American involvement in the war after Pearl Harbor.
My dad joined the army and was enlisted for over 4 years. He fought in Europe and was one of the attached units encircled in Bastonge Belgium in "the battle of the bulge" toward the end of the European theater of the war. He didn't speak much about his war time experiences to me but I've always had an interest in that period of time. Reading about it in such detail was very interesting to me. (By the way, in case you're interested, I've seen soft cover 6 volume sets of Churchill's The Second World War for sale for about 20 dollars plus shipping, and hard cover sets for sale for around 45 dollars plus shipping, so about 50 dollars if you live in the US.)

I tried watching a few episodes of Supernatural. I will give it a few more episodes to see if I can get interested in it. In the first few episodes the two brothers are sort of taking over their missing father's business: sending troublesome spirits of dead people to their resting places so they stop bothering or killing people. They have some book of their father's which has information and spells, incantations, etc. and which may have certain magical properties of its own I think.
I get a little bored at the transparently contrived situations they get into. I think Supernatural is geared toward a younger crowd, though it's not nearly as bad as the next to last episode of The Originals, or Legacies.
So far I have not found Lucifer, but I will give it a try when I get a chance.

I read a lot too, I have bookcases that are full, stacks on the floor, some still in boxes. I read mostly nonfiction, occasionally some science fiction. For the most part the TV is on for the background noise, although there are some shows that command my full attention.

Supernatural will be going into their 14th season this fall. It was geared (I think) to the younger audience in the beginning but I believe it has grown. I watched the first 4 1/2 seasons, then about halfway through the 5th season something (I can't remember what it was) happened/changed & I drifted away for a couple of seasons. I picked it up again in the 7th or 8th season. Like any show it has it's 'subpar' episodes, as an example they did a 'Scooby-Doo' episode (all animation) this season. I didn't watch it because it just seemed a ridiculous thing to do, although many viewers loved it.

Just rewatched S 3 E 14 A Streetcar Named Desire. Elijah escaped having his sireline severed but Klaus did not because Davina was so determined to see it happen and see him dead. I just watched the scene where Elijah confronts Aya and she blames him for "abandoning" her when he ran from Michael. Elijah made me sick with his wimpy caving in language, how he couldn't forgive himself for leaving her, etc. And when he was going to kill her he pointed the revolver with the white oak bullets at her heart and stood there with his hand shaking, unable to pull the trigger. I was thinking God you're a wimp Elijah. Finally Hayley shoved a stake through her heart from behind.

And later Davina cried and whined to Marcel that he didn't 'believe in me", her voice breaking with that stupid little girl crying noise. She appeals to the teenie crowd I guess. Davina reminds me of Hope in the final season, though Hope doesn't have that whiny sound to her voice. Both of them appeal to the teenie crowd. I still like a lot about the show. But as I watch it over again I see things about it that irritate me. There is far too much indulging in self-pity and blaming others.
