Discuss WWE Raw

As sort of a personal challenge/goal, I'm going through and watching every Wrestlemania main event in order, one every day. I'd estimate before I started I'd only seen ~half of them. I finished Wrestlemania 3's main event tonight, and after watching the first three WM main events, I wanted to make the (possibly redundant) comment that it is incredible to me how over Hogan was. None of these matches are really anything special, in fact quite the opposite. The tag match at WM 1 is a cluster mess, the Bundy cage match is a slow plodding match that lacks logic, and the Andre match up until the bodyslam finish is much of the same with a couple of botches (though much of that can be attributed to Andre - god bless him for giving his body and life to wrestling, but he just couldn't really physically do much by this point).

And in spite of all of this, the crowd for all three of these Wrestlemanias are just going absolutely freaking nuts for Hogan. It's remarkable. Hogan was SO crazy over with the audience. I know it's modern eyes watching an older product (though I had at some point seen the Bundy and Andre matches at some point in the past), but this level of match quality would get unbelievable scorn from today's fanbase. Just watching these matches is a testament to Hogan's charisma and ability to work a crowd. He truly transcended wrestling in that he was a megastar in the wrestling industry without being that great of a wrestler at all.

Anyways, just stuck out to me and had to get this out somewhere. These boards are pretty dead but I'm willing to rank all the WM main events when I finish in a month or so if anyone's interested.

I’d be interested to see how you rank them.

Like you said, Hogan had incredible charisma. He knew how to work a crowd better than anyone.

He’d be hated today if he relied upon the same formula, however he was one of the smartest men in the business, knew his audience and was adaptable.

He had a more varied move set in Japan because the Japanese audience demanded it. He turned heel in WCW because the audience demanded an edgier character.

If he existed today, I believe he’d develop a repetoir to suit the times. It’s hard to imagine, however he succeeded in every environment, so why not?

Out of interest, where does everyone post these days?

I actually thought Hogan's tag match was the best or second best match on that entire first Wrestlemania card.

Hogan vs Bundy was better than a lot of the crap at Wrestlemania 2.

Hogan vs Andre is probably the only one of those 3 I'd say was a lesser wrestling match on the card though a great moment.

As for where I post, when it comes to wrestling, really only here. Haven't looked anywhere else.

Just to clarify, I'm only watching the main events, so I don't have the full cards to compare them to. That's interesting to hear though, and I definitely can't imagine the crowd being any hotter for anything else than they were for Hogan. Someday I'll have to actually take the time to watch the entire cards. I'll give my own personal rankings of the main events when I finish in about a month or so.

This is the only wrestling place I post. I'd be curious to hear if there's anywhere else good as well. The nice thing about IMDb was that it was big enough to have active discussions but small enough that you could recognize everyone and not feel like a drop in the ocean. It had almost the perfect balance that I don't know I'll find anywhere else. I wish they hadn't shut those boards down.
