This is easily one of my favorite shows ever.

Just about finished with season six. I am so impressed by the fashions of the twenties. The dresses are breathtaking. Learned more about history than I ever did in school.

I'm bingeing too, although I did watch it in its entirety when it originally aired. The costumes are gorgeous, and you can't beat Highclere Castle for a location! Just love it!

Who was your favorite? Your least liked?

My favorite character is Branson. I really love them all including Thomas. Should finish up tonight and sure hope he has a happy ending. All the characters are really layered. Saw in pintrist that they might make a movie (Hollywood will never do it justice) also that Jullian Fellowes (sp) may write a prequel. I have a love/hate relationship with Lady Mary. Must she be such a snob at times? Must she be so nasty to Lady Edith?

You are definitely more forgiving than I am! Edith writing to the Turkish ambassador: unforgivable. Thomas's schemes against Bates (and kidnapping Isis): hateworthy! I love Bates and Anna, and Branson, too. My favorite was Sybil (😥), but I love the Dowager, too. I do like Mary, and she can be snobby, especially her demeanor. But she accepted Branson quickly, and Matthew, too! And as for her treatment of Edith, Edith had it coming to her. She deliberately tried to ruin Mary's life and reputation. That was so cruel. If Edith were my sister I'd never speak to her again. I know I'm in the minority with this opinion, most people are sympathetic to her. Do you have sisters? Please let me know what you think of the finale. I bet you'll like how it ends!

It's Saturday, and family prevented my from finishing the series last night. Grrr. Hopefully will finish tonight.
Seems to me Edith was so overlooked by her family, instead they sung Lady Mary's praises so often, that in my heart I forgave her. (I know...I know) The same for Thomas...actually his despicable dog napping turned out ok...lol, though I worried for Isis. What a beautiful dog Isis is. Felt so bad when sHe passed. Cora and Robert showed their love for humanity when they took Isis to bed for her to feel loved as she passed. Adore Lady Violet. Played to the hilt by Maggie Smith.

I can only binge after my husband goes to bed, he's not a fan of British period drama. He did like Upstairs, Downstairs, though. We'll have to talk about Up/Dn sometime. Anyway, back to Mary. In Edwardian England, I don't think the other daughters could marry until the eldest did. Unless you run away with the chauffeur! In a period where woman didn't have many rights, the first born daughter probably had the most privilege. An attractive oldest daughter was an asset and she'd be treated as such. I asked if you had sisters before because if you do, you'd know they don't always get along. I had some pretty viscous quarrels with my sisters, but we never stepped over the line like Edith did. Edith was the not as attractive second daughter, and she wasn't happy about it. When we first met her she was reading her sister's mail. I think Julian Fellowes wanted us to not like her at first, but then he put her through hell, and we were supposed to like her. Isis was gorgeous! I read that the BBC felt she had to go because her name was so controversial! And you're right about the dogknapping, it was supposed to have a humorous element. I would freak out if someone stole my dog, though. 😨😠

+David: Thanks!

Ty shez and David for the comments. I did have a sister, but there was a 12 yr age gap so guess that doesn't pertain to me.
Finished the series. So happy all ended well for everyone! How long ago was U/d? I watched the series but remember little about it. I binge watched a few other series, and I am going to start threads about them in a bit. Started watching a series from Amazon called "Amnesia" Brendon Cole is in it. Interesting story line. Cop story basically.

Yes, Julian Fellowes was considerate of his fans. U/D aired on Masterpiece Theater through the seventies. A lot of the Downton storylines mimic U/D, whether by accident or design I don't know. Maybe David does...? I've watched U/D about five times in its entirety, and I could watch it again. I liked it more than Downton, but it suffers from older production values. The whole thing is on YouTube if you want to watch it again. I'll check out Amnesia. I saw Brendon Coyle in a Catherine Cookson (ha! I loved her books when I was young!) movie on YouTube. He was so young, and his hair was long! He was cute as hell, really. Do you like British period drama, Masterpiece Classic, that type of thing?

David, if you have the time, try watching a few episodes of the original Upstairs Downstairs. If you're able to watch YouTube on your television you'll find that the video quality is pretty good, considering the age of the program. Many people have uploaded Masterpiece/BBC productions onto YouTube, and I bless them all. I've seen The Forsyte Saga (old and new), Bleak House, Northanger Abbey, Six Wives of Henry VIII, War and Peace (with Anthony Hopkins!), and many other wonderful series on there.

I have to chime in and totally agree the dresses were beautiful, I almost cried at the wedding dresses! And even the wedding guests all looked gorgeous. Downton was one of my fave things to watch for all the costumes alone. Loved it all.

Claddagh: weren't those beaded dresses gorgeous? Edith wore a teal-colored peacock number that was tear-worthy as well. The Edwardian styles were awesome, but the roaring twenties numbers were incredible. Have you seen Miss Fishers' Murder Mysteries on Netflix? Same time period, and again, beautiful clothes, only Miss Fisher is stylishly flamboyant!

I haven't seen it but will definitely be checking it out, thanks. I do love the costume dramas over the years. I saw someone mention The forsyte Saga, upstairs downstairs both loved. Also The House Of Eliott? I could go on but yes just love the costumes.
