Discuss Murphy Brown

Back when the series was in its original run on a weekly basis, it didn't really come across too strongly. But watching it every day on METV, it's very easy to see. Murphy Brown is NOT a good person. She is petty and selfish. She screws over her friends whenever it suits her. Are we supposed to admire her?

Fascinating. thinking

It's a phenomenon, that I've noticed happening more and more.

Something similar occurred with the character of Dr. Gregory House from "House M.D.", when rewatching the episodes daily.
When the show was first on, I liked his character. He was in fact the only likeable one.
The others, to me, were just jealous of his genius, and they were trying to undermine him in every possible way.
I still don't like them, but the same goes for House now.

Of course, I'll always want him as my doctor, but nothing else.

So, Murphy, House, and how many more characters we loved to admire, are now just plain "bad".

What has changed?

The characters are the same, so it must be us.

Were we delusional when watching the show for the first time?

Is it the frequency, daily instead of weekly, of watching the same character, that make us realize how unlikeable the character really is? It sometimes happens in real life too. grin

Perhaps it's just that after living thousands (love to exaggerate smile_cat ) of years, we have become old, bitter and cynical.
And hopefully a little wiser, too. wink

That's my theory. Here is another example: Paul and Jamie Buchman of "Mad About You".

My wife used to be a "House" fan. I got sick of the pattern of every ep. No matter what they try, it makes things worse until the last eight minutes or so when they magically figure out the ailment.
