There's a new arrival in Coronation Street: Florrie Lindley, who is taking over the Corner Shop. Her first day on the job is not without incident as she runs into the local busy-body Ena Sharples. Meanwhile, Elsie Tanner is on at her son, Dennis, to get some work but he reminds her that it's not easy for someone who's just got out of prison. Later, there's a misunderstanding when Elsie accuses Dennis of taking money from her purse when in fact it was her daughter Linda. Also, Linda tells Elsie that she's leaving her husband. Elsie says she'll believe it when she sees it! At number 3, there's unrest at the Barlow's. Young Kenneth Barlow has an argument with his father, Frank, when he announces that he's met a girl and he's taking her to the Imperial Hotel. Frank argues that Ken has all but forgotten his working class roots.

Ida embarrasses Ken by showing Susan his baby photos. Ivan turns up at the Rovers. Esther takes charge of Christine. Susan embarrases Ken by going into the Rovers. Linda bumps into Ivan.

May is upset when Christine doesn't want to see Malcolm anymore. Ena is visited by Vera and Martha. Ena accuses Martha of being after her job. Christine accuses Malcolm of being ashamed of her but he invites her to the rugby club dance. Lucille turns up having gone Christmas shopping. The police call for Dennis.

Lucille dresses up in Christine's dress and marks it. Dennis reveals the police suspect him of breaking and entering on the night he won the money, and hasn't an alibi. Harry reveals he saw Dennis at the dogs winning the money. Malcolm and Christine go to the dance. Ena walks out of hospital and back to the Mission.

Christine is annoyed that Malcolm didn't see her over her mourning period and slams the door in his face. Ken and his student friends make ban-the-bomb posters until Ida orders them out of the house. Arnold Tanner turns up at No.11 after fifteen years and asks Elsie to give him a divorce so that he can marry Norah Dawson. She refuses and they argue before he storms out. Ena, seeing Arnold leaving the house from her vestry window, spreads it about that Elsie's got a fella. Harry is promoted to inspector at the bus depot.

Elsie threatens Ena in the Rovers and tells her the man is, in fact, Arnold. The milkman can't raise Albert - Ken and David break into No.1 to find Albert collapsed in the kitchen. Dr. Tinsley feels that Albert's daughter, Beattie, ought to look after Albert. Christine gets a bill from the plumbers for £1, 1/3. The plumber's mate, Joe Makinson, takes the bill back in sympathy when she can't pay it. Ida alerts Beattie to Albert's collapse and condition but Albert refuses to live with his daughter. Elsie has some beauty cream and starts to relax when Arnold arrives to have a chat.

However they endure Gordon's Uncle Fred all evening before discovering he is not a relative at all but just a friend of the family.

Ken calls on Beattie Pearson and discovers Ida has not been there. Lenny tells Dennis he is not at all talented but wants him to work for him as a talent scout. Frank contacts the police who realise that her description matches that of a woman who was knocked down in Gray Street and is dead. They arrive in the Street to tell him.

Dennis has to stop Elsie from hitting Ena, who ends the fight by shouting that if she had written the letter she would have had the decency to sign it. Elsie realises with shock that she's right. The argument over, the residents wonder who did write it.

Minnie's mother's banging on the ceiling begins to get to Ena and she feels that she has to move on from 15 Jubilee Terrace. Elsie and Dennis use the phone at Miami Modes to phone Linda. Dennis' cheque for £8 16/- finally arrives from Lenny Phillips and the Walkers cash it. Minnie's mother gets up when she hears Ena has gone. Martha can't take Ena in because Lily's family is staying with her. Dennis cooks Elsie a meal as a 'thank you' for defending him. Florrie takes to dressing up and going out. Ena arrives back to stay at the Mission.

The "Ex-student slams neighbours" story appears in the paper: Len and Harry grow very angry over the article. Frank rows with Ken, ashamed of his disloyalty to his class. He tells Ken he can't write any more articles. Harry wants to write complaining to the papers but Len feels it would do no good. Elsie feels the article was well-written but warns Ken that Len is after him. Len insults Ken to Frank and refuses to apologise causing Frank almost to fight him in the Street. Ken realises he'll have to stand up to the residents. When he tries to put across his view point in the Rovers, Len hits him and they brawl across the pub, Ken being knocked out.

Annie thinks she's found blood on the Rovers' floor as she cleans up and is annoyed that Jack isn't bothered by the fight. Ken has concussion from a cut on his head and has been told to stay in bed by Dr. Graham. Frank is upset that Ken doesn't like the area he was brought up.The Banner newspaper rings the Rovers asking for Ken and Jack goes to fetch him. Len and Harry are in the pub when he walks in, annoying them when he claims he's "fighting fit" again. Jack and Annie try to calm the two men. The paper asks Ken to write articles on "Life in a typical Northern town" and he goads Len to punch him again. Despite his previous doubts, Frank thinks Ken should write the articles when he hears about the 180 guinea fee.

Elsie's Sunday morning peace is disturbed by children playing outside and Dennis's demand for his breakfast. Concepta has a headache but insists on going to mass as usual. Annie frantically packs in her usual cleaning routine prior to an overnight stay in Derby visiting Joan and Gordon. She also leaves Jack a list of jobs to do and instructions to keep an eye on Len and the Barlows.

Harry puts £5 on, Len £10 and they persuade Elsie to put £10 on.

Dennis sells more tickets than seats and the concert is over-booked. Ena discovers that the performers, the "Blue Streak Rockets", were banned and the police tell them they cannot perform. The Walkers go to a Brewery Dance, planning to stay the night in a plush hotel. Ena locks the piano lid but Minnie opens it with a hair pin. She entertains the audience of four hundred with constant renditions of Goodbye, Dolly Gray. Captain Johnson and his troupe break down but send the sealions, Bunny and Sherry on. Dennis has to cancel the concert, causing an uproar. Ena gets drunk with the Rockets. Dennis is stuck with the Rockets and sealions for the night. He gets the Rovers' key off Concepta and installs them in the pub. The Walkers return home to find sealions in the bath and the Rockets in their bed

Annie gossips about Concepta's age in the shop. Concepta overhears and is upset. She breaks down, worried about having a baby at her age. Harry returns home early to find her missing. He tracks her down to the Red Rec and reassures her that everything will be alright. Ken does a lot of overtime but Frank discovers that the school is on a half-day.

Annie has found out the truth about Jack's mystery illness and when she returns from her investigations, the Rovers becomes a different place again as she loads job after job on Jack. After a good deal of thought, Harry and Len enter Lucky Lolita for the races in the last hope that she will get back to her old form. Back at the Vestry, Ena falls to the floor with a mild stroke and, as the night wears on, nobody comes to help her.

Jerry discovers Myra has been in the Street. Myra assures Len she is not contesting the divorce but she is interested in Jerry's relationship with Irma. Jerry decides to visit Myra to find out what she's up to.

The Rovers is decorated. Emily tells Irma she and Miklos are getting very friendly. Myra flaunts her new friendship with Jerry. The Walkers change the old pumps. Annie is horrified to discover the factory is to be demolished when the Rovers is to be painted. Miklos worries about the demolition because the factory is so old. Myra calls on Jerry late at night and begs him to tell her that he loves her. She tells him that she is lonely and begs to stay the night.

Annie strings onions up around the pub to get rid of the paint fumes. Len tells Jerry to get rid of Myra but he is keen to have her around. He warns him that they could be accused of collusion and goes away to leave them to it. The twins follow Bobby into the factory. Myra asks to spend the weekend with Jerry. He agrees. Minnie rescues Bobby. The demolition starts as Susan and Peter cower in the factory.

Ken and Val realise the twins are missing. Ken hears the twins squealing in the factory as they play in the puddles, he and Miklos carry them out, stopping the bulldozer. Myra tries to analyse where the marriage went wrong. She tries desperately to please Jerry. Ena accuses Minnie of being too interested in Bobby to see the twins. Val realises the twins are becoming more independent. Jerry visit's Myra's house and brings back some of her clothes. Annie complains about the dirt in the Rovers but Miklos wins her round. Ena tells Minnie that Henry has offered her lodgings again. Jerry refuses to sleep with Myra. Minnie begs Ena not to leave but Ena says she's accepted the offer.

Len assures Jerry he's in the clear as no one knows Myra stayed. Annie throws the students out of the Rovers. Tim bets Lucille he can get the Rovers to pay up for rag week. David tells Minnie to talk to Ena before she advertises. Mr Stock, an enquiry agent, checks Jerry out. Jerry tells him Myra is lying. Elsie lets it be known she's home for a break because Steve has been posted to Panama. Annie is kidnapped by the students, who demand £5 for her release. Jack starts off the appeal with a penny.

Annie enjoys her captivity at the University and gladly pays the students five guineas. She poses in handcuffs for the evening paper. Tim Jordan asks Lucille to appear in the rag procession on a float as a 1920s Bathing Beauty. Hilda warns Minnie off her patch. A triumphant Myra tells Jerry that the divorce won't get to court as she has a witness to prove they were together. Irma discovers that Emily is reading Miklos's books on Communism. Jerry is surprised that anyone local would stick their neck out for Myra. Hilda feels bad when she finds out that Minnie has taken to drink.

Len tells Jerry he was out of order asking Jack to lie for him. Jerry feels he has no other choice. Elsie sets tongues wagging by coming into the Corner Shop looking a mess. Jack is afraid of lying in court but wants to help Jerry. Miklos arranges to meet Albert at the Rovers to give him his dad's collection of Hungarian coins. Mr Stock tells Jack about a mate who got done for perjury before asking him whether he saw Myra inside Len's. Jack is in the middle of denying it when Jerry stops him and changes his own statement. David feels there must be something more to life than serving a load of gossipy women.

The police catch the thief trying to sell the coins. He's a casual worker from the building site. George Dickinson turns up and asks Jerry to take Myra back. Elsie breaks down.

She tells Len that Steve had told her he was sorry he'd married her. She doesn't know what's going to happen to her.

Jerry knows they'll make no money out of it but is thinking of the future. Len doesn't want to expand; he likes things the way they are. Jerry tells him he'll take the contract on himself.

She tells Val she fancies Miklos but doesn't know if she could sleep with him. Minnie amazes Ken by getting the car to work. Lucille feels Miklos is wasted on Emily. Miklos lets Emily's hair down and tries to get her into bed. He is angry when she stops him. She tells him that she tried and breaks down.

The residents prepare for the reception but feel sure something is going to go wrong because it's Dennis. Elsie, Linda, Ernie Sutton and Jerry witness Dennis and Jenny's marriage. Annie, Lucille, Gordon, Maggie, Les, Len, Emily, Minnie, Ena, Albert and Wally Tanner join in the reception. Jerry shocks everyone by his speech - urging the Tanners not to be selfish and to work at their marriage. Unseen by anyone Jerry leaves for London. Jenny doesn't mind about Dennis going to Bristol. In a slanging match in the middle of the street Hilda accuses Elsie of scheming to get Stan on her own. Elsie tells her she's not that desperate. Ken decides he'll have to sell the car to buy new furniture. Elsie crashes her car into the back of Ken's. Len moves into No.9. Effie Spicer moves into No.4, next to Ena, and crosses her with her airs and graces.

Convict Frank Riley traps Val. She tells him she has no children and is only just married. The womenfolk gather in the Rovers, not wanting to be on their own whilst the convict is on the loose. Val tries to alert Ena by banging on the water pipes. She is terrified when Peter wakes up and Riley realises she has children. Ken phones Val but Riley refuses to let her answer it, threatening to hurt Peter and Susan. Ena hears the phone ringing and begins to worry. Riley takes a fancy to Val and starts caressing her. Ena raises the alarm. Annie takes charge and Jack phones the police. Riley demands money and clothes from Val. He then tells her he wants something from her. The police move the residents into houses so no one is alone. Val promises that she won't raise the alarm if Riley leaves her alone but Riley sees the police outside. Ken arrives at the Rovers, not knowing anything of what is happening.

Emily reveals that Ena told the vicar that the shop was too much for her. The Reverend James asks Emily to be his assistant at the nursery. Elsie prepares herself to tells Steve 'no' for the last time. In the taxi she hears over the radio that Len is at Steve's. She asks the taxi to take her home. The police arrive to tell Elsie that Steve is dead.

Effie accuses Maggie and Val of telling Ena about the slate and breaks down. The party takes over the select and Ken plays his trumpet. Lucille worries about Gordon missing his exams.
