Discuss Star Trek

The "revised" (ST Discovery) and "rebooted" (ST J. J. Abrams) versions of Star Trek continue to generate a lot of discussion among the fans. In the future there will be even more versions with a new look and adaptations to the then existing advanced technology and social changes in our world (the real one wink ). So would it suffice to only use the terms "alternate", "parallel" and "mirror"?

Perhaps, as in the Marvel and DC world, the term "multiverse" should be used, and Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek would be the original universe zero (Primary Universe as in STNG Q?).

Instead of trying to fit the "new" movies and series in Universe Zero, they should each occur in their own universe (#?), and in the future more (#) can be added.

And also, let's hope, that one day a new (animated?) movie or series will be made, a "true" prequel or sequel to Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek (Universe Zero).

@Jetfire59 grin I should hope that it's everyone's favorite Buckaroo Banzi quote.

It was quoted by actor Ted Raimi as sentient android Harry Mudd in the short lived series "Odyssey 5". He is about to shut his body down and move his sentience to the internet.

"Well, as a rock & roll physicist once said, No matter where you go, there you are."

@wonder2wonder:😎Sounds good to me!

As Dr. Buckaroo Banzi would say, "Don't be mean. We don't have to be mean". (Boy, I can just imagine the responses I'm going to get to this, Robert Lansing help me) :-)

Those are exactly the reasons why it - and all the other Mirror episodes, really - stank. They were pretending that very different situations for 100 or more years, would somehow still end up with Kirk in command, Spock as first officer, etc etc. Even after 100+ years of promotion by assassination which would inevitably lead to some people being killed before they had the children - and grandchildren, etc - that needed to exist 100+ years later for everything to somehow be "the same, but different..."

That's kind of a problem with any alternate reality/dimension themed shows or movies. You would never in reality have anything close from one to the other universe. For example, if Nazis invaded the US during WWII, and you were in present day America, there would not be one person born after that time in the Prime Universe that would also be in the alternate Nazi universe. It's not like you would have Lady Gaga in that universe as a german collaborator to infiltrate and betray any local resistance to the Nazi overlords etc. Unless people are conceived at the exact time and circumstances that they were in the Prime universe, then the same sperm tadpole is not going to fertilize the mom's egg (if the reality even allows for the parents to get together in the same manner anyways).

I just ignore this and try to enjoy the show because these types of shows are good for inspiring imagination and speculation of things that normally wouldn't be.

Raumschiff Fuhrer Johan T Kirk ,Herr Spock und Frau Gaga. smile

It's almost two years later, and the writers of the new shows seem to have completely ditched the idea of a possible multiverse to explain all the inconsistencies.

Instead they've opted to continue on the ill-conceived path of rewriting the time line ("canon can be changed to fit the plot").

The destruction of Romulus and Vulcan - Kelvin time line - are now a major part of the storyline in "Star Trek: Picard".

The possible crossovers between "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Picard", means that the original series time line will intersect with the Kelvin time line.

Some characters and their stories from the "Star Trek: Short Treks" will also be involved.

Will NuSpock - logically he has shaved off his beard now - also reappear? And Una, and NuPike?

So, amid all this confusion, will the writers succeed in tying it all together in a neat package?

It's 'all hands on deck' now to save the Fall of the Federation, this year in the shows coming to a streaming service near you.

Are they going to make it so that the Federation collapses even sooner than Mirror Spock predicted for the Empire?

Ridiculous.

Try pointing that out to people like Invidia maybe she will listen to you wink

Fans of these new "Star Trek" shows are happy with the direction it has taken, as it will address a lot of continuity errors, mixing popular characters with new ones. And as it happens in the future (25th and 32nd century) there will be no more conflicting issues with technology that did not exist (yet) in the old shows (before 24th century) and the presence of (new versus old look) alien species.

There's a threat to the Federation - from within - making it vulnerable to the outside forces, but it's expected that the protagonists will be able to save it, or rebuild it. Afterwards, there will be a new optimistic hope for the future following these dark years.

These are just some rumours of the plot. All will be revealed this year.

That sounds like the same kind of optimism that was possible for Discovery before it actually premiered. Is there reason to believe the optimism is any more justified now?

Nope
