在科学技术省任职的天马博士的儿子飞雄，在车祸中身亡。天马痛失爱子，他尝试着按照儿子生前的模样制造了一个机器人——阿童木。并赋予它超常本领：10万匹马力和7种武器，并带回科学省。后来在油轮上，阿童木被马戏团团长骗走；但马戏团里虐待机器人，他被科学省长官茶水博士赎出，取名“阿童木”。在以后的生活里，他有时候会因作为机器人而备受歧视，但他一直想在人类和机器人之间搭起友好的桥梁，并同恶势力做斗争。
