So Azmadeus is holding a [recently?] resurrected Gabriel captive. Turns out the actor (Richard Speight Jr.) has already directed two eps this season, a third later (the 20th ep), and has directed eps last season, too. If I kept up with who directs what I probably wouldn't have been surprised that of course he'd go from behind the camera back to the front of the camera at some point.

I wonder if Asmodeus somehow stole Gabriel's shape-shifting ability. Remember how Lucifer said he didn't give him that ability? That he must've acquired it elsewhere?

That's a good point. I thought it was weird it was brought up at least twice this season that no one knows how he got that ability (once by Lucifer last episode once by Castiel this episode). Maybe we now have our answer.
