Discuss American Dad!

Edgy adult cartoons. When did they start? Betty Boop? Early Looney Tunes? Nah, they were quite status quo, reinforcing stereotypes and isms and things that were uncomfortable, creepy even.

The Flintstones? The Jetsons? Wait Till Your Father Gets Home? Perhaps, but still light-hearted.

The Simpsons was sharp satire. But it opened a floodgate.

South Park. King of the Hill. Family Guy. Thde piffle headlining this thread. These went from the sublime to the ridiculous. Crass, obsessed with toilet humor - baser, low-brow, offensive for the sake of it.

When, oh when, will this fad just fade out? We had the american apple pie family shows of the 50s (My Three Sons, Father Knows Best, Leave It To Beaver), then the big families (Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, Eight is Enough) of the 60s, then the political edge of the 70s sitcoms (All In the Family, Maud, The Jeffersons, Sandford and Son, Chico and the Man, Good Times), then the wholesome family hugging sitcoms of the 80s (Family Ties, Cosby Show, Growing Pains), then the swinging singles sitcoms of the 90s (Seinfeld, Friends)...all these fads faded.

Hopefully, we're finally reaching the end of this fad.
