I have some questions about the correct way to credit people's appearances in documentaries when archive footage is involved. When these are answered, I think it might be helpful to update the Contribution Bible page for cast additions, to explicitly clarify the preferred way to handle these things.
These questions are prompted by my recent updates to the credits for the documentary Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey". That film contains a combination of:
(I've also made a post on the film's own Content Issues forum, about one particular cast/writing credit.)
Questions:
1. If someone is interviewed for a documentary, but also appears in archive footage from something in which they played a fictional character, should they be credited as just "Self" or "Self / [character name]"? If so, should "(archive footage)" be appended to the latter?
e.g. In Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is interviewed as himself (and is credited under "Featuring:" in the end credits), but he also appears in footage from Game of Death as "Mantis" (but that character name never appears as an on-screen credit, and IIRC might not even be mentioned anywhere in the documentary). Which of these would be the correct way to list him on TMDB?
It's currently (a). I don't like (c) because that would incorrectly imply that the "(archive footage)" label also applies to "Self".
For comparison, IMDb currently lists him as "Mantis (archive footage)" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0297814/fullcredits/ - this is definitely incorrect because he also appears as an interviewee in new interviews done for the documentary.
Looking at how this is handled in some other documentaries about films, most seem to just list "Self" alone (e.g. Hearts of Darkness only lists Martin Sheen as "Self", without his Apocalypse Now character name), but some list both (e.g. The Matrix Revisited lists Keanu Reeves as "Self - Neo" - separated by a hyphen, not a forward slash).
2. If a documentary interviewee appears on-screen alongside a name caption explaining who they are, but their name doesn't appear in the final end credits, does that count as "credited" or "(uncredited)"?
I'm fairly sure that this should count as a credit, but I'd like to confirm this. (Maybe this clarification should be added to the Cast page of the Contribution Bible?)
3. If a documentary features archive footage in which a notable person is highlighted in a circle or has an arrow pointing to them with a name to explain who they are, does that count as "credited"?
3a. What if the person in archive footage doesn't have an on-screen text credit, but their name is read out aloud by the narrator - does that count as "credited"?
4. My Q3+3a above were about motion footage, but I think I also read somewhere that still photographs don't count as archive footage - if so, could the Contribution Bible page be updated to explicitly clarify that?
5. One more question about title eligibility.
As mentioned above, the Bruce Lee documentary includes a re-enactment of the unfilmed portions of Game of Death. The Region 2 DVD also presents an extended version of this as its own separate featurette called "The Story". Is this eligible for inclusion as its own separate title on TMDB? Reading the Not Supported section of the New Content page:
Extra DVD material exception: some extra DVD material such as documentaries, making of and short films are allowed as a movie in the movie section provided they have a director listed in their credits.
The separate bonus featurette version of "The Story" does have its own director credit, along with its own set of credits (which in some cases are different from those on the main documentary - a different narrator, for example). So I think it should be eligible for addition, right?
