This probably wasn't much of an issue before the pandemic, but is it possible to make it so that the database chooses the first non-premiere date as the release year? Because some movies opened in their original territories digitally, these are being overlooked for dates in other countries that may have received them as theatrical releases, but causes the year to go out. (See Buddy Games, for example.)
On a related note, I wouldn't mind the release date snap defaulting to a territory for digital or theatrical, rather than simply the latter. As I'm from the UK, this makes the local release dates more visible, especially for VOD releases.

I don't know what the best option is. But many festival screenings have been held online only and are therefore entered as digital releases.

In my opinion, I think the best way of listing those festival screenings is as premieres, with maybe a note that they were digital because of the circumstances. That way it doesn't confuse them with their actual VOD release dates.

I hear you, but movies screened at online events and festivals forced to go online due to the pandemic are added as digital releases.
