I don't know if it's some kind of built-in part of whatever software is being used, or maybe something that could be made optional. But I use the various cursor keys - page up, page down, up, down, left, right... - to shift around in pages especially when there are long lines that go off-screen.

A while back - maybe a few months ago now? - I found that the left and right "arrow" keys now change pages within the site. And not always in expected or convenient ways.

Also, if I was on like page 5 of a subject, and looking at a thread, I could use the good old Alt-LeftArrow to go back to the page 5 "index." Now it goes all the way back to page 1 instead.

Maybe some people prefer it that way? Seems unlikely to me. But if it could be made at least optional, if not completed undone, that would be nice.

There's was never a change in the up/down arrow behaviour. With regards to left right, where/how is an example that text would be too wide and you would need to scroll left or right?

I think I need more info about what you're describing here. I don't think I changed anything in this area, there's no shortcut that I added to go back to page 1. Left/right arrows will act as page navigators (only go to next and previous) but that's all.

Just a note regarding this -> this behaviour maybe refers to the still existing bug of back arrows that don't work. For example, when you click through search results, like this one:

https://www.themoviedb.org/search/movie?query=woman&page=12

When you click on the left arrow at the bottom, you don't jump a page back -> you jump to the start. I'm not aware if this happens on other pages, too -> and maybe @Knixon means something completely different? grin

I was not aware of that bug. Indeed that has nothing to do with keyboard shortcuts but is good to know and also happens to be an easy fix wink

P.S. The pagination on searches has been fixed.

Travis:

Well my screen setting is 1280 x 1024 sometimes because that's what the monitor supports. At that setting, regular thread screens easily go off the right edge, with the "status bar" on the left.

And maybe you weren't aware of it, but people can - and sometimes do - set extremely long thread titles/subjects. Apparently there is no limit on how long they can be, or the limit is very high. That also causes it to go off-screen, although the actual posts are still "adjusted" to the same length of lines as before. (Unless those don't-format-this tricks are use.) And even shorter subjects/titles can put the Last Post information off-screen.

But the main thing is, the right/left-arrow thing didn't start changing pages for me, until rather recently. Like in the past few months? Something like that. Before then, all it did was just move me around on my own screen, as God intended. And it's much nicer being able to use the keyboard for that, rather than having to use the scroll bars. Especially since that's the normal behavior everywhere else on the internet.

Could you maybe make it so that Ctrl-LeftArrow or Ctrl-RightArrow does the paging, instead? No other site I go to, uses Right/LeftArrow for paging.

And what does the padlock symbol mean, next to the subject?

The lock means the thread is private. You created it that way when ticking off “Mark as private” or something upon creation.

It means only moderators and Travis can see the thread. Useful when reporting spam or users misbehaving!

Oh, I didn't mean to do that, and I don't see any way to un-do it.

I also dont' remember it being that way when I started this thread. Maybe someone else did it, somehow?

And frankly, I don't like the arrow "navigation" thing at all. Even if it's been 'fixed' to eliminate some other 'bug.'

The site wasn't that way to start with, and it would be better if it was removed entirely, or at least changed so that it doesn't use the same keys as 'scrolling' does. It would be like if you changed the letter 'u' to move Up and 'd' to move Down and 'l' to move Left and 'r' to move Right. You could argue that it's "convenient" and even "intuitive" but those keys already have their functions.

Shift+Arrow, or Ctrl+Arrow, etc, would be fine.

That's weird, the action of marking it private or public used to be visible in the discussion activity, but somehow it no longer is. Because I just marked it public and I don't see it in the activity: http://prntscr.com/kzqvmo

The topic starter and mods and travis can mark threads private or public, in the sidebar at " Actions" , under the big green button for making a new discussion.

// EDIT: My mistake, you can't create private general discussions with the green button. Only private reports.

But isn't this a general discussion? I do see the "make private" though, now. I expected it to be more in the "text" area. Maybe I bumped it accidentally? Or Travis or one of you did.

Anyway, do you have an opinion on my "complaint?" I don't see any need or reason to make the regular left/right arrow keys do that, especially when they already have well-established functions. Something like Ctrl-Arrow would do just as well. At least when not editing text, where Ctrl-Arrow also has well-established functions. (As do the regular arrow keys, which I note do not change pages when creating or editing posts. So it's obviously configurable that way.)

I really love the functionalities of the shortcuts! It Makes editing that much easier!

I thought nowadays everyone had huge monitors. But even on my small 13” macbook i don’t need arrowkeys to navigate through the screen. That said. One can also just use the mouse scroller right?

I've never had - or seen - a mouse with left/right scroll, only up/down. Plus not wanting to use the on-screen scroll bars because they require grabbing the mouse again, is the same problem with having to grab the mouse again to use a mouse scroller. If there was a left/right one, which I've never seen. Or to use the up/down, which I don't have, for the same reason.

Would Ctrl-Arrow be that difficult? Things are already set up so that left/right-Arrow DON'T change pages while in text, like I am now writing this. So it shouldn't be a big deal to make it so that Ctrl-Arrow changes pages while not editing text, as is done with the regular Arrow keys now. (In text, Ctrl-Arrow skips a word ahead or back.)

The function of the Arrow keys, including up/down as well as left/right, already have well-established purposes: scrolling in the page/screen, without needing to grab the mouse again.

You can use right/left scroll by pressing on the scroller of the mouse!

Maybe on the forums ctrl-arrow! Or like a way to disable it in your profile.

There's two things that will get looked at:

  1. On discussion pages, the pages should be sized to the max of your browser window. I'll take a look at what that means at 1024px wide and prevent the need for any horizontal scrolling.
  2. I will add a way to disable keyboard shortcuts in your account.

Not sure on timeline for both of these just yet, I'm busy with other things but it's on my radar.

That would be great, thank you. I actually have 1280 wide, but maybe some people - especially on some laptops? - are limited to 1024.

I also don't always use full-screen for this or other sites. So the "working space" might be even less than 1024 in that situation. But just being able to disable that shortcut thing completely - or maybe make it so that users can select whether they want to use just Arrows or Ctrl-Arrows? - would (re)solve the issue.

Also, Travis, you've mentioned some fixes to pagination in some other threads. I would like to suggest that in addition to having the option to jump immediately to "Last Page," there should also be one to jump all the way back to "First Page," not just having to do "Previous Page" over and over, or having to go back to the thread list/"menu" and back in.

I've mentioned in the past, too, that imdb (sorry for cursing) had the feature to go all the way to the last page of a thread, right from the thread list/"menu." So that you could immediately get to the most recent posts, without having to go into the thread first and then go to "Last Page." That would be a nice addition too.
