The Movie Database Support

Hi,

I play with the discover feature in the api, and have two questions about it :

  • When you sort by popularity desc, is this popularity index global, or calculated on the last x period of time (said, last week) ? Because the first result I get is Big bang theory, which clearly isn't the most popular tv show by now. Can you set up a parameter for that ?
  • Is it possible to cross discover result with similars movies or tv, to get results who can match, let's say, an user tastes ?

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

When you sort by popularity desc, is this popularity index global, or calculated on the last x period of time (said, last week) ? Because the first result I get is Big bang theory, which clearly isn't the most popular tv show by now. Can you set up a parameter for that ?

Popularity is just a trending score that is calculated daily. So I suppose to answer your question, it's a global property calculated from the day the item was created. There is no means to constrain it to the most popular items within a time period.

Having said that, the /trending API methods just went live. This brings a new dimension to sorting items that will be getting added to discover (it's not yet.) I'll see about working on that next week. In the mean time, depending on your use case, you could use the trending API. Docs are going up shortly, but they are the following:

Daily Trending

https://api.themoviedb.org/3/trending/movie/day?api_key=###
https://api.themoviedb.org/3/trending/tv/day?api_key=###
https://api.themoviedb.org/3/trending/person/day?api_key=###
https://api.themoviedb.org/3/trending/all/day?api_key=###

Weekly Trending

https://api.themoviedb.org/3/trending/movie/week?api_key=###
https://api.themoviedb.org/3/trending/tv/week?api_key=###
https://api.themoviedb.org/3/trending/person/week?api_key=###
https://api.themoviedb.org/3/trending/all/weekly?api_key=###

I just started collecting the data here so they might be a little light for the next few days.

Is it possible to cross discover result with similars movies or tv, to get results who can match, let's say, an user tastes ?

No, nothing like this is possible right now. The only thing close would be to use our account sessions in v4 which allows you to pull an account's recommendation data. This data is based on the items you have rated and marked as a favourite on TMDb.

I see ! Thanks for your detailled answer, I'll play with the trending endpoint then ;)
