The Movie Database Support

Hello! I'm new here waves Could we have a general forum, please, alongside the specific TV/movie/celebrity threads? I think it would be cool for genre discussion as well as a more generic 'intro' thread. Also, I miss imdb boards! it might have already been covered - I had a look already but couldn't find it, apologies if I missed it

A general board was tried but discontinued due to trolls. It is not likely to be tried again. No genre-specific boards either, apparently. There was a lot of discussion a while ago, but it may be hard to find now.

Ah, that's a shame, although pretty predictable. Thanks for the info!

I was going to start a new topic on this, but when I saw KeyserSuze's post I just thought I'd add my vote of support.

It would be really nice to give a "General" board another try.

I know this is a film/television site, but the General board really fleshed it out, I think, and many of us learned a lot of fascinating things about each other which really enhanced the experience of using this site.

Of course, not long after IMDB shut down its boards, the trolls arrived en masse, and I remember Travis was understandably very frustrated by this (as I think most of the rest of us were), and axed that particular board in short order.

But, perhaps maybe, he would consider giving it another try?

I would understand if he is totally against it, and I want to emphasize that TMDB is a great site and I as a user am very appreciative that we have it-- thank you Travis, I think you are doing a wonderful job!

I just wanted to add my two pennies:)

It was a disaster last time, and Travis was pretty adamant about not resurrecting it. And I agree completely w/his decision. It's just not going to happen when you have volunteer MODS who don't have time to play an endless game of whack-a-mole w/trolls, etc.

I would like it if he tried again. Me and another poster did some 'Top Ten Films' yearly lists for the 1930's through the 2016, which is good but I would like to start a thread about the latest movies we've seen & what we rated them. It was a big favorite over at IMDb on the 'Poll Board', there were thousands of replies. There isn't any other way of doing it, it would have to be on a general discussion section.

Travis, please think about another go?

ooh :) This is interesting! I'd love it if we could give it another go. I know I wasn't here for last time but I have faith and optimism that we can be allowed to have nice things.

I am also more than happy to write a conditions of posting post and pin it somewhere, as well as doing a bit of troll spotting too, if that helps and it means we can have a general board.

pretty please?

Since our General Chat forum closed, our former troll population settled in to a particular competing site. Inexplicably, they were/are welcomed, embraced, apparently accept the terms and conditions there, and I've silently ongoingly observed that while still they do continue to love wallowing in garbage, they stick to their own chosen designated areas on that site, where they only ever interact with one another who are their established "usuals" (the same people we last year, on our General Chat, observed them endlessly either in the preferred company of, or, if of an opposing band, endlessly going at); they don't bother other members on that site, nor pollute any of the movie/t.v./celebrity boards and the site's other mainstream areas. Thoroughly incredibly, some of our former trolls are actually moderators over on that site, on specific boards that only they - trolls - inhabit.

My point being that our former trolls seem to actually be entirely contented, and feeling at home, and where they want to be, and to have fallen into a routine that they enjoy, where they are now. I also silently observe another particular site's General Chat area now and then, and our former trolls (who also for a while some of them were trying to work their magic there) also don't bug people there any more.

While it's of course entirely possible that if our site were to reopen General Chat or a similar sort of area the trolls would return, it's every bit much as possible that they wouldn't. (Quite frankly, I think they considered 98.5% of "regular" [non-troll] TMDb members to be utterly boring and of absolutely no interest to them; I many times noticed trolls state, on their own TMDb threads, that TMDb was a boring site to them and discussing other site options.) If they'd return, simply again close G.C. down - and it then most definitely remain forever closed.

I used to be daily very active on our General Chat forum and tremendously enjoyed the interesting, diverse (I mean the non-trolls, of course), engaging cross-section (all ages, genres, tastes, preferred eras/decades) mix of members and the possibility of being able to discuss things that now there's simply no place (not counting on this Support forum, which is for site issues and the such) to have conversations about on our site.

Dream on, folks. I doubt that Travis (and the MODS) are even watching this thread.

I'd love to see the General Forum resurrected. I enjoyed the interaction of other members and was sad to see it go.

I think a General Board should be created. They should try it again.

There are always trolls in every site but that's always a normal risk. If not then all message boards in existence should be locked.

Not true. Message boards for most movies, TV series, actors, etc., don't tend to attract trolls. But a general board does tend to become a swamp because the trolls and other immature folks seem to see it as their playground.

I bet it will be a really long time before Travis tries it again, and I think it's at or near the bottom of his incredibly long list of things to do. And if he starts it up again, I bet it's going to get really bad really quickly again. And when it does, I think he'll finally give up on it once and for all, unless he and the MODS are masochists who want to spend most/all of their time policing the trolls. (And I don't think they are masochists.)

It's true what I said.

And are you forgetting the The Dark Knight , The Expendables, Games of Thrones, etc message boards from IMDB? All of them were trolls giant nests.

Travis has many priorities, that's true, but I think sooner or later General Message Boards shold be added.

If there are people who don't like them or don't like some trolls then... just ignore those boards and those trolls.
