Something that I normally would do, but now I've been tied up with other things for a while: to go over the movies from the big festivals (Toronto, Venice etc) and check if the movies have been added. And if they have, which should be the case for most movies, just check that the basics are correct. With the basics I mean to check if the following are present for the English translation:

  • IMDb ID (may not always exist for obscure titles) and an overview. Also make sure the entry is not set to video:true. Adding the runtime is helpful as well.

  • A correct release date, should almost always be a premiere, but there could be exceptions.

  • Basic crew stuff: Director and writer for sure, but perhaps even Director of Photography, Editor and Original Music Composer if that information is available.

Other than the links provided above, good secondary sources are reviews in the trades (Variety, The Hollywood Reporter etc) that usually have information that can be useful. Official Homepages or Facebook pages should of course be consulted if they are available.

If someone wants to do this, feel free to reply and say what your are going to do. It could be a full festival or a section of a festival. Just to avoid someone else going over the same entries. snail

That was a lot of movie's... But I think I will start by looking over the VENICE 74 COMPETITION section first.

I will get to it later today.

Thanks Viktor! Yes, many movies, but many of them are the key movies that all will be talking about in a few months (if not already) so it's important they are correct. relaxed

This might take longer than i thought, seams like the movies are missing a lot of actors. Is it okey if i add them in the IMDb order when IMDb uses in credit order? Or are we using some other order?

Edit:

It also seams like some of the names of the characters are wrong compared to IMDb, should i just leave them for now or use the Names IMDb have?

You could do the full additions if you want, but that takes a long time. I usually add the basic ones only. You could, for example, add the top five or six actors for each movie. We do not use credit order. We want the main actors added first. So you need to find out who the top credited actors are before adding. Posters, reviews or official websites can be helpful if no information can be found on the official festival webpage. runner

I get the main actors first part, but don't we use the credits order in the movie credits after that?

I added a bunch of actors to Downsizing but they are probably in the wrong order...

The credits order can be alphabetical or in order of appearance and possibly some other ways too. If I have seen a movie it's easier to make sure I don't forget a big role down the list, but otherwise it can be hard. However, it's important to note that when a movie is at the festival stage there will always be errors on IMDb. Those errors are usually corrected when the movie is properly released and the list of credits is out in public.

What I'm trying to say is that it's a good idea to stick to only the main actors early. Too many times I've had to spend a lot of time correcting credits because someone added 50 credits before the movie was even released (and 20 of those credits were not even part of the final movie!).

Ehh I might just have done that...

But I will correct it when its released. (I just hope I remember to do it...)

Just remember it from now on. snail A lot of early IMDb content is user added and I think many of those being extras in a movie are adding themselves to those movies for promotional purposes. Then it turns out they were cut or not visible in the movie so they are eventually deleted.

I will!

I hope that don't start happening here too.

I really want to stress that IMDb can only be trusted for a very small % of moderated movies and they are a pretty awful source for TV series. Maybe do not copy the credits from IMDb for recent series and when the episodes are easily accessible? thinking

Agreed. But when I checked for Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy and a few other super mainstream TV stuff, they were correct - comparing them to on screen credits. Caution is advised at all times though. And using one more source is recommended!

I'll keep this in mind for future edits!
