The Movie Database Support

Hi guys! This is a topic for anyone who, like me, finds it ridiculously hard to add crew credits. smile_cat

My first objective was to build a list of all the jobs available and, thanks to @Janar, the biggest part of the job is already done. My proposition is that we add any other form these credits may appear as and specification when necessary (e.g. the difference between Music and Original Music Composer), but I am open to suggestions. I really don't want this to be a mod-only project, everyone is welcomed to contribute! If you are entering credits for a film or a TV show and notice the on-screen credit is different from the credit in the database, please come by and let us know. nerd

I thought it would also make sense for this topic to double up as an help topic for confusing crew credits.

Please let me know if you spot errors on the list, but please do not request jobs missing from TMDB. The official topic for new crew job requests is here. clipboard

I think there's Action Director now! I sometimes see that in anime too.

@banana_girl, I'm sorry about the late reply - I don't really have time for this kind of conceptual work/writing at the moment ... snail

My question would be which term we want to use as the primary name? I personally like Second Assistant Camera much better and I've seen it the most in credits

Me too! I added a temporary definition to Camera Loader, but I'll move it to Second Assistant Camera as soon as it's an official job. I think we have to be VERY careful with the crew jobs, though. The 2nd assistant and the loader can be two different persons.

Yes, I have to agree with the bold part - it's really difficult for me to decide between primary names and alternatives, especially when I don't know the job very good. Also, it seems that historically people in the UK use different terms than in the US for some jobs. For example, when I searched for the job title "Draughtsman", I came across a webpage with a general explanation that says:

"Differences between UK to USA Set Decorating & Property Departments

The hierarchy in the United Kingdom does have some title variants with job descriptions. Here is a guide to the main positions within each area, as there are many alternatives dependent on the film requirements and to which country the film is based in. Some titles vary like for example Draughtsman UK, to Set Designer or Draftsman USA. The Production Designer is the head of various departments, Art, Construction, Decorating, Property & Prop Making. Here is a guide to the main positions within each area."

They mention a lot of other examples from the art department - I think/fear that complicates our task of determining primaries/alternatives immensely! Because: It is the same job, but it has two different names in English, and people can use them in whatever way they want in credits. And it's weird, but a short time after I read this webpage, I watched the movie Beauty and the Beast, and at the end of the movie they credit more than a dozen of people with both names exactly like this:

"Set Designers / Draughtspersons"

Yes, they use both terms for all those people! So, what does this mean - did those people both jobs on this film and I would have to credit all of them accordingly twice? Or, is it the same job and I have to choose one of the terms? Which one of the two? It's really complicated to decide - I don't have a good answer to this problem in general ... :-(

Bigger productions use more than 1 camera on set, so they have an Second Assistant "A" Camera, a Second Assistant "B" Camera and so on (similar to "A" Camera Operator vs. "B" Camera Operator as well as First Assistant "A" Camera vs. First Assistant "B" Camera).

I think it would be better to have A and B cameras. e.g. when someone is credited for both cameras, we can't add double credits! Oh, and I think I saw a "C" camera credit? thinking

You can easily find credits for "D" camera operators on IMDb, meaning that really big productions use 4 different cameras for a shoot (or even for a scene). I think the question for TMDb is: Do we need/want the distinction between A, B, C, D and so on or is it okay to not have this distinction?

A practical example: In the second season of the tv show Wynonna Earp, the "A" Camera Operator was Craig Anderl and the "B" Camera Operator was Jonathan Benny. However, after 10 episodes, there was a change for the last 2 episodes of the season (episodes 11 and 12): Craig Anderl was out, Jonathan Benny became the new "A" Camera Operator, and Brett Manyluk became the new "B" Camera Operator. The problem right now for TMDb is: You can't reflect this real development of change of positions, because you can add them only as "Camera Operator" -> and Jonathan Benny ends up as a regular crew member, while the other 2 are added per episode. Meaning: Looking at TMDb, you have no idea what happened.

That's why I think it would make sense to have a distinction. (I could give you very similar examples of such job change from the tv shows Orphan Black and The Good Wife, if I remember correctly).

Scenic Artist [CREW] = Painter [ART] -> other alternative names: Scenic, Scenic Painter, Scenographer, Set Painter.

I researched all of those the other day, but I'm still lost. I think Scenic Artist and Painter are different jobs. I'm also a bit unsure about Set Painter. It's all so confusing. Anyone knows painters? smile_cat Also, I think we're missing the "On-Set" ones.

Yes, you're right - I made a mistake in my earlier post. Scenic Artist and Painter are 2 different jobs. The former is more creative and invents full sceneries like landscapes and such for the set - painters just paint a wall or something else with any colour needed. The former is more artsy/creative, the other is just construction work. I also think a "Set Painter" is a "Painter" - it's the same.

About the "On-Set" Painter - I think it means the same as Standby Painter: Fixing any last-minute paint problems on sets or on locations during film shoots. I'm not sure, but, once again, it seems to be common in the UK to call such crew members "Standby [whatever]", while they're called "On-Set [whatever]" in the US. I might be wrong, but that's my impression in general.

One tiny thing: In your first post, you updated the following line:

Armory Coordinator (alt. Armourer Coordinator)

The alt. has to be "Armour*y* Coordinator"

I want to add something else in general, but I don't have much time anymore before going to work. I'm not sure the idea of shaking up the crew jobs and determining primaries/alternatives is a good one anymore. I did before when you started this thread, but I watched a lot of movies with bigger budgets/crews in the last weeks and I fear it's not worth our time to adjust the current system due to it's technical deficiencies and restrictions. I wrote about this before, but the key thing that's missing is to add any job available without a label. I came to the conclusion that the current system of a limited set of labels will never solve certain problems, no matter how much we fix the current system (key words: credit sections with second unit and/or additional photography crews; film crews in different cities/locations; movies with different segements, eg different crews, and many more things).

I think the main problem is a technical one that only Travis can solve by working out a totally different concept of how to add crew jobs in general - which means all our efforts fixing the current system are, in my eyes, not worth our time at all. A better technical solution would allow every contributor to add any given crew job that appears in the credits "as it is", meaning that labels would be obsolete entirely. That's why I won't add to this thread anymore in the future - I don't see any advantage in fixing a system that doesn't work in the first place for many big productions out there.

Oh, and, last thing, I spotted an interesting bug in the current system. The other day, I watched the movie Lion, and I took a look at the cast list here on TMDb. One of the current crew credits in the camera department reads:

Peter Beeh - Aerial Camera (suggest in addition to Helicopter Camera)

Yes, the job title actually reads: "Aerial Camera (suggest in addition to Helicopter Camera)"! And I was thinking: How was it possible for the contributor to add this title in the first place? This label doesn't exist at the moment - how did she/he do it?

Here's how: Travis made a mistake in the past when he added this specific new crew job, because in November 2015 user Torq00 wrote exactly this line as a new crew job request in the other thread. Travis added this new label on January 4th 2017, but he accidentally forgot to remove the comment from the new label (the part "suggest in addition to Helicopter Camera"). Eventually, Torq added this new job title to the movie Lion on January 9th 2017 - 5 days after Travis added this new label. Lineker found the mistake 8 days later on January 17th and Travis immediately fixed the new label. However - Travis did not check/fix (the) past contribution(s) that were already made in the time between!

Yes, it's a weird coincidence that this happened - no question about it. But it also indicates that Travis doesn't check/update past contributions when he changes crew job labels. And that's relevant for this masterlist here: When we attempt to change labels in the future, does Travis update past contributions? Is he even able to update past contributions in any way on a technical level? That's an important question - and to me, it doesn't look like Travis is aware of this or does have any possibility to do this (and, in some cases, it's even impossible -> fixing/updating camera operators into A/B/C camera operators, for example).

Oh, and my little example isn't the only one that indicates this "tiny" technical bug/mistake! Take a look at this profile of dialogue editor Jackie Johnson - do you see the mistake? Her credits are mostly for working as a "dialogue editor", but those credits are currently in 2 different sections: "SOUND" and "EDITING". Again, how is this possible - currently, there's only 1 label for dialogue editor in the section SOUND. Again, Travis must have changed it and forgot to check/fix past contributions - that's the only explanation I have. And, by the way, the weird thing is that lineker just recently - August 2nd 2017 - suggested this move into the other section and Travis never officially confirmed that he changed it (as long as I remember)!

Those examples are not very important overall, but it shows to me that - in case we want to change the current masterlist in a huge way - there are some technical problems within the current system that are too complicated to resolve (or hardly to resolve for Travis only). That's another reason why I think it's worthless to fix the current system/masterlist - our efforts won't solve the bigger problems that I think exist when we want to contribute crew credits from bigger productions.

Puh, that was a lot - and now I have to go to work without any sleep ... sleeping

Best wishes,

janar

currently, there's only 1 label for dialogue editor in the section SOUND. Again, Travis must have changed it and forgot to check/fix past contributions - that's the only explanation I have.

Yes, it was indeed changed. From past job department changes the jobs added before the change have stayed with the old department and it seems to be the same here. I always fix the ones I come across. I'll take a look at the other things you wrote tomorrow.

All very good points @janar72 ! I've been thinking about this too and the primary job thing sounds way too complicated!

Assistant Property Master (alt. Assistant Prop Master, Assistant Props Master, Assistant Propmaster, Assistant Propsmaster)

This is work that I think will be helpful. point_up_tone5

Camera Loader (alt. Clapper Loader, Clapper-Loader, Second Assistant Camera, 2nd Assistant Camera, Second AC, 2nd AC)

But this one is too messy and should be split in two. point_up_tone4 I think it's okay to have both the UK and the US version of a job and the current and old names.

@lineker said:

But, see, that was one of my points in my earlier post: It's good that you fix those things when you come across them, I do that, too! But we're only human, and in this special case, it's probably a huge waste of our time (and very inefficient) if - and that's the big if here - IF Travis is able to change such things automatically once and for all.

My idea is this: Travis searches the whole data base one single time for all credits of all persons, looks into the column of the job label, and sets the job sections to "SOUND" for each of these credits that has the job label "Dialogue Editor". That's 1 single data base command line, and if he runs this 1 single time, it's done! We as contributors/mods will never see this little bug again, we will never have to fix this again, it would be absolutely clean, and we can do other stuff instead.

And that's why I brought up this example with the "Aerial Camera": It looks to me that Travis does not use such searches to replace contributions from the past when he changes labels (your impression from the past is the same). He just changes the label or the section a label belongs to - but that's it. And I was wondering if he's just not aware of it or if he has good reasons to not do it (maybe it's too risky or too invasive for the data base, or too time consuming to run - the database is huge and it might take too long -, or it's just impossible for other reasons)?

And, come to think of it, he could do the same for our "lovely" label "Cinematography"! He searches the whole data base for every single credit of every single person and replaces every single label "Cinematography" with the label "Director of Photography". He does this one time - and we'll never have to deal with it again. It would be such a huge help for us as mods/contributors, and it would be so easy and efficient for a machine to do this job! And that's what I meant, partly, in my earlier post: When we discuss changing/improving this masterlist among us mods/contributors, we should keep in mind the technical side and how it could help us to achieve a better job list.

Of course, this automatic replacement doesn't work for more complex cases - such as replacing Camera Operator with "A" Camera Operator / "B" Camera Operator etc. Or replacing "Music" with "Original Music Composer". Such cases won't work, and we have to do those manually in the future. But I think we could find a lot of other examples in which we could benefit from the machine instead of doing it as humans, and we could probably replace/merge/fix a few job titles in this masterlist more easily and more efficient. IF Travis is able to do it and actually does it, of course. koala

So, you think we should focus more (or focus only?) on those instances that differ in spelling or wording when it comes to alternatives? I'm not sure about it, and it's still difficult. For examples, Viktor made the suggestion of adding the label "Props" to the "Art Department" - and my question would be: Is that only an abbreviation of "Property Master" or do we need it as a new label? Or, does the credit "Art Direction" mean the same as "Art Director" or is it something more? Or, similar, is "Casting" the same as "Casting Director"? There are a few more I can think of which are still foggy to me ...

On the other hand, if it's no problem to add as many new labels as we want, we probably should not decide for only one when in question?!?

Camera Loader (alt. Clapper Loader, Clapper-Loader, Second Assistant Camera, 2nd Assistant Camera, Second AC, 2nd AC)

But this one is too messy and should be split in two. point_up_tone4 I think it's okay to have both the UK and the US version of a job and the current and old names.

Yes, I think you're right regarding this.

So, you think we should focus more (or focus only?) on those instances that differ in spelling or wording when it comes to alternatives?

Yup. I agree it's still difficult! I think if there is any doubt, it's safer to add both jobs (props, casting director). But I think the difference between Cinematography and DOP, or Art Direction and Art Director (if there is one), is probably negligible – as long as both terms are never use simultaneously in the credits. thinking

Question: If the music credits are as follow, what should the "with" people be credited as? Music/OMC?

Music by XXX
with YYY, ZZZ

I added a few jobs we wanted to move, but I'm a bit confused about how our job department works: thinking

Art = Art Direction/Production Design + Sets?
Production = Production + Location + Casting?
Sound = Sound + Music?
Visual Effects = Visual Effects + Special Effects?
Lightning = Electric stuff ?
Crew = Stunt + Transportation + odd jobs?

Chapeau, you make a great job, but I don't found the department/jobs for people witch make the adaptation to foreign languages Perhaps you can extend the projet ?? Merci Michael

We currently only support the original cast and crew. But for e.g. a script written in French and translated to English before the filming, we have a "Translator" (alt. Translated by) job.

Yes, I think so, too. At the end of this post are a few more I thought of ...

I don't understand what you mean? Do you have an example?

I added a few jobs we wanted to move, but I'm a bit confused about how our job department works: thinking

You are not alone ... rofl

Art = Art Direction/Production Design + Sets?
Production = Production + Location + Casting?

I still have no idea if "Post Production" belongs here or into SOUND?

Sound = Sound + Music?
Visual Effects = Visual Effects + Special Effects?

I'm not sure that "Special Effects" is intended to belong here, because it's partly in CREW currently. Thinking of it, SFX are more pre-production and on set, while VFX are more in studio during post-production - no? I'm not very familiar with these departments, to be honest ...

Lightning = Electric stuff ?
Crew = Stunt + Transportation + odd jobs?

Haha, CREW is everything else for me ... grin Saying this, I think there are still a lot of labels we should/could move from this section to other sections. For examples, "Additional Writing" should be in WRITING, "Carpenter" should be in ART, "Cableman" could be in LIGHTING; "Dramaturgy" could be in DIRECTION, "Drone Operator" could be in CAMERA, "Editorial Staff" belongs probably in EDITING, "Executive Music Producer" should be in SOUND, "Executive Visual Effects Producer" should move to VISUAL EFFECTS, "Graphic Novel Illustrator" belongs in ART, and a lot more ...

That's all for today. As promised, a few more alternatives/switches:

ART

  • Draughtsman -> Draughtsperson, Draftsperson, Draughtswoman, Draftswoman (all other alt.)
  • Leadman -> Leadwoman, Leadperson (both alternatives)

COSTUME & MAKE-UP

  • I would like to rename/switch "Key Hair Stylist" to "Key Hairstylist" for consistency.

CREW

  • Steadycam -> merge with "Steadicam Operator" in CAMERA

DIRECTING

  • Continuity -> remove, because it's an alternative to "Script Supervisor"

PRODUCTION

  • Location Manager -> Locations Manager (alternative)

SOUND

  • Original Music Composer -> "Score by" and "Background Score by" (both alternatives)

VISUAL EFFECTS

  • I would like to rename/switch all already existing "VFX [XXX]" labels into "Visual Effects [XXX]" labels for consistency.

But I think the difference between Cinematography and DOP, or Art Direction and Art Director (if there is one), is probably negligible – as long as both terms are never use simultaneously in the credits.

Well, damn: https://i.imgur.com/LPDoIjv.png

p.s. I have really put this credit thing aside for now, but I will circle back eventually. duck

p.s. I have really put this credit thing aside for now, but I will circle back eventually. duck

To be honest, I'm not sure it's worth the time, actually.

I've seen so many more credits over the last 3 months, with so many more variations of already existing crew jobs, and so many more new jobs that are still missing in our lists - it becomes more and more pointless to me to try to put all of these into one big schema. And, it seems that no one else really cares; even moderators use whatever they can find for jobs that need proper differentiation ... worried

However, I have a specific question regarding a specific job:

Brendan Adam-Zwelling is a professional Still(s) Photographer - his TMDb page and his personal website are here:

https://www.themoviedb.org/person/1913708-brendan-adam-zwelling
http://www.bazstills.com/

In his bio on his website, he calls himself a "Unit Still Photographer for the film and television industry" - and I've seen 2 different movies in which he was credited as "Still(s) Photographer."

BUT, when I watched the movie Almost Adults last week again, he was actually credited with the label "Set Photography". I made a screenshot - here:

https://picload.org/view/dddllwdr/setphotography.jpg.html

And that's the thing I wanted to ask: The label "Set Photographer" is currently a new suggestion in the other thread in the section CAMERA. But if it's (technically) the same job, wouldn't it be better to only have one primary job label (Still Photographer) and many alternatives (Set Photographer, Onset Photographer, On-Set Photographer, Set Photography, Unit Still Photographer)? astonished

By the way, IMDb does provide both labels (look here, credit for Family Tree), but doesn't seem to know about the actual on-screen end-credit of Brendan Adam-Zwelling:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm6460302

So, what's the better solution for TMDb in this specific case? Any opinions?

Banana, can you add the label "Film Editor" as an alternative to the primary label "Editor" in your first post? Thanks! grin

From my point of view, it seems a Set Photographer takes photos on the set. That are used as Stills/promotional images whatever, so would be a synonym of Still Photographer, right?! So I think you are correct!

Can someone help me? I look for other opinions regarding the specific on screen credit: "Based on the Film Written by".

Which existing crew job label could/should I use for this -> "story" - "or orginal story" - or "book" - or "adaptation" - or "idea"?!? Or do we need a new one for this - for example, "film"? I can't decide ... weary

Long explanation:

Michael Crichton is credited in all 10 episodes of season 1 of the tv show Westworld with "Based on the Film Written by". You can watch the full opening credits of S01E01 here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elkHuRROPfk

At 1:33 min, you can see this specific credit -> it's the same for all 10 episodes! However, episode 1 is special, because at 1:38 min, Michael Crichton is also credited with the label "Story by". But this credit only appears in episode 1 - not the other 9 episodes! So, this disqualifies using the label "story" for both credits, I think. Maybe it also disqualifies "original story"?!?

The credit "Based on the Film Written by" refers to the movie from 1973, Westworld. This movie was written and directed by Michael Crichton -> the orginal on-screen opening credits in this movie are (I just checked it):

Written and Directed by
MICHAEL CRICHTON

There are no other credits for him in this film -> that's all.

So, the television show refers to his work on this film -> but what would be the correct job label for him here on TMDb?!? thinking

Can someone help me? I look for other opinions regarding the specific on screen credit: "Based on the Film Written by".

@janar: We don't have a job title for that so I always leave it out while waiting for someone to come up with something that would work. I know there are many similar examples (perhaps with different wording) in the database.

Michael Crichton is also credited with the label "Story by".

Writing credits are usually very strict so this maybe means he was directly involved with that episode?

(I have yet to see Westwolrd so I can't look at any links at this time. dolphin )
