The Movie Database Support

Hi guys! This is a topic for anyone who, like me, finds it ridiculously hard to add crew credits. smile_cat

My first objective was to build a list of all the jobs available and, thanks to @Janar, the biggest part of the job is already done. My proposition is that we add any other form these credits may appear as and specification when necessary (e.g. the difference between Music and Original Music Composer), but I am open to suggestions. I really don't want this to be a mod-only project, everyone is welcomed to contribute! If you are entering credits for a film or a TV show and notice the on-screen credit is different from the credit in the database, please come by and let us know. nerd

I thought it would also make sense for this topic to double up as an help topic for confusing crew credits.

Please let me know if you spot errors on the list, but please do not request jobs missing from TMDB. The official topic for new crew job requests is here. clipboard

Hey @banana_girl, awesome!

Something I can do to the jobs list is add alternative names. And at this point I can probably even add a little tool for mods to add them. No one really talked about this being a problem until only very recently wink So, if that helps when you are talking about jobs in the sense of the ones that can go by multiple names, choose a primary name and feel free to keep track of alts too. We can use those.

Great idea Banana!

Something I can do to the jobs list is add alternative names.

That would be very nice! smiley_cat One obvious example would be to add Re-Recording Mixer as an alternative to Sound Re-Recording Mixer.

Maybe it's better to wait until Travis adds the new crew jobs first?!? Otherwise you'll have to change the whole list at a later point a lot ... dromedary_camel Just for example: I would love for Travis to add the label "Production Designer" next to the existing "Production Design". I think as a job title it fits much better, so it wouldn't be an alternative anymore. But that's not decided, yet - so maybe we just wait a little bit longer and look which new jobs are being added after all?

On the other hand, we could use this new thread at the beginning to point out and discuss credits that are in the wrong section at the moment? For example: "Location Scout" in ART should be moved to PRODUCTION, in which all the other location labels are. There are so many more - I just don't have time until next week to look through them.

Also, a suggestion: I'm not sure about it, but maybe it would be helpful to add the alternatives also as bullet points, too - maybe in italic? What I mean is this: You see a movie, you see the credit "Re-Recording Mixer", you look for it, but you can't find it under the letter "R" anywhere in this list. Would it be helpful to add a line like:

Re-Recording Mixer: confer to Sound-Re-Recording Mixer

I'm not sure this is helpful at all, and the list might become very confusing one day? Just an idea ...

And just for info, there's 1 line effed-up in the section EDITING with two different jobs (my fault):

  • Associate Editor Co-Editor

Also, a few other alternatives that quickly come to my mind:

  • Art Direction [ART] -> Art Director (I suggested the alternative)
  • (Assistant) Prop Master [ART] -> (Assistant) Property Master, (Assistant) Props Master, (Assistant) Propmaster, (Assistant) Propsmaster
  • Draughtsman [ART] -> Draftsman (I suggested the alternative)
  • Title Designer [ART] -> Title Design

  • Still Photographer [CAMERA] -> Stills Photographer

  • Costume Design [COSTUME & MAKE-UP] -> Costume Designer (I suggested the alternative)

  • Hairstylist [COSTUME & MAKE-UP] -> Hair, Hair Stylist

  • Key Hair Stylist [COSTUME & MAKE-UP] -> Key Hair, Key Hairstylist

  • Makeup ... [COSTUME & MAKE-UP] -> Make-Up ...

  • Prosthetic ... [COSTUME & MAKE-UP] -> Prosthetics ...

  • Shoe Design [COSTUME & MAKE-UP] -> Shoe Designer

  • Actor's Assistant [CREW] -> Assistant to [actor/actress]

  • Armorer and Armory Coordinator [CREW] -> Armourer / Armoury Coordinator [by the way, they could also be moved to the section ART, I think]

  • Craft Service [CREW] -> Craft Services

  • Production Office Assistant [CREW] -> Office PA, Office Production Assistant

  • Scenic Artist [CREW] -> Scenic (I'm not sure about this one, to be honest)

  • Digital Intermediate ... [EDITING] -> DI ...

  • Local Casting [PRODUCTION] -> [any city/region/country] Casting, for example "Melbourne Casting"

  • Musician [SOUND] -> [any oboist, guitar player, cellist etc. that plays an intrument]

Other things:

  • Camera Loader [CAMERA] = Loader [CREW] = Clapper Loader [I suggested this] -> I think that's all basically the same job.
  • Second Unit Director of Photography [CAMERA] -> Second Unit Cinematographer [CREW] -> maybe also remove the second one, the same way as "Cinematography"?
  • Prop Maker [CREW] = Propmaker [CREW] -> that's the same, but they're both available right now.
  • Tattooist [CREW] and Tattoo Designer [COSTUME & MAKE-UP] -> isn't that the same or is there a difference? Whatever, the first one should be moved to COSTUME & MAKE-UP.

I'm out of time ...

Best wishes,

janar

Local Casting [PRODUCTION] -> [any city/region/country] Casting, for example "Melbourne Casting"

I want to add to this:

  • If there is a TV show or movie, with Casting by XXX and YYY, and in the next or same screen (or line, in case of movie credits) you see [city or country name] casting by AAA and BBB.... AAA and BBB will also get the "Casting" crew job title, not local casting! Local casting is only for city/country casting mentioned further near the end in the credits, totally not at the same "page" as the main casting credits.

Something I can do to the jobs list is add alternative names. And at this point I can probably even add a little tool for mods to add them.

I was secretly hoping you would say that. And yes, please, let us help! mouse

True, the list will be turned upside down very soon. But don't worry, I'm mentally prepared for that to happen. muscle

I agree! I think reading the list and playing with it will also help fix misplaced (and duplicate?) credits.

Also, a suggestion: I'm not sure about it, but maybe it would be helpful to add the alternatives also as bullet points, too - maybe in italic?

That's not a bad idea, but I'm a bit afraid it would become too confusing. Maybe I should add a little note inviting people to search the lists using CTRL+F? thinking

@janar72 I'll go over your list in a little while.

Travis, how will that work exactly? @lineker suggested something like this in the other thread:

Another help would be if the job was recognized even if you didn't start with typing the first word in the job. So if you type "re-reco.." sound re-recording mixer would appear, or if you type composer, original music composer would appear. 🐌 I'm not sure how hard this would be for Travis to implement, but it would be helpful even for experienced users and moderators.

Is that what you mean here? Or do you mean something different?

No like alternative/translated titles for films, if you search for "de hopeloze heks" (The Worst Witch) several entries will appear, even though it's not the original title.

Okidoki! smile_cat

Oh yeah, that would be another way; didn't think of that ...

There's no hurry, really. I'll be occupied with Orphan Black ending for the next days ... knife

I still don't understand it. sob Can we use an example?

Let's say I watch a movie and there's the credit "Office PA" -> exactly like this. Let's say we defined as primary name "Production Office Assistant", and we defined alternative names "Office PA" and "Office Production Assistant".

So, my question: What will happen when I go to the jobs list of the movie and I copy/paste "Office PA" into the field? Will all the different alternatives be displayed and I can choose between them? Or only the primary name and the alternatives in parenthesis?

Oh right, those specifics/layout/details will only be known after Travis implements it, but the function is that it will indeed show the main job title, whether you searched for DoP or Director of Photography or Cinematography/er.

And who knows, maybe the alternative job title it matches your search to, That would be handy, as then the user knows it is the right job

I updated the list!

Camera Loader [CAMERA] = Loader [CREW] = Clapper Loader [I suggested this] -> I think that's all basically the same job.

I think you are right. According to wiki (and many other websites), Second Assistant Camera is also the same job. thinking

Tattooist [CREW] and Tattoo Designer [COSTUME & MAKE-UP]

Mmmm, I think they probably are two jobs. duck

I also added a few obvious alternative names. And I think Post Supervisor = Post Production Supervisor.

My question would be which term we want to use as the primary name? I personally like Second Assistant Camera much better and I've seen it the most in credits - but that's just my choice/experience (also, 2nd Assistant Camera, Second AC and 2nd AC are other alternative names).

Also, a First Assistant Camera [CAMERA] is often called "Focus Puller" [currently a new suggestion] - other alternatives are First AC, 1st Assistant Camera, 1st AC. The following webpage says the term "Focus Puller" is the one that was previously used:

http://creativeskillset.org/job_roles/3081_first_assistant_camera

Another aspect: Smaller productions only use a single Assistant Camera (or AC) who does both jobs - that's one of the new suggestions.

Another aspect: Bigger productions use more than 1 camera on set, so they have an Second Assistant "A" Camera, a Second Assistant "B" Camera and so on (similar to "A" Camera Operator vs. "B" Camera Operator as well as First Assistant "A" Camera vs. First Assistant "B" Camera). As of now, you can't make this difference while contributing credits to TMDb - it's all the same. I'm not sure the difference is that important, though - maybe we don't need to make it? On the other hand, I do know that people climb up in their career going from "B" Camera to "A" camera within the same production - something you wouldn't recognize on TMDb without differentiation. It's a tricky decision ...

And another aspect: For re-shoots and/or additional photography, there already exists a name Additional Camera in [CAMERA]. An alternative name for this would be Additional Camera Operator, but we probably also need Additional First Assistant Camera and Additional Second Assistant Camera as new terms (both were suggested by me in the other thread).

Tattooist [CREW] and Tattoo Designer [COSTUME & MAKE-UP]

Mmmm, I think they probably are two jobs. duck

You mean the Tattooist is the Tattoo Artist who applies it, and the designer is the one who draws it before it is applied? Yeah, the difference actually makes sense. Wikipedia also mentions Tattooer as another alternative name for Tattooist.

I also added a few obvious alternative names. And I think Post Supervisor = Post Production Supervisor.

I think so, too.

Two other things I want to mention:

1.) A Sound Re-Recording Mixer is also often called Sound Re-Recording Engineer - it's the same.

2.) A Scenic Artist [CREW], also called Scenic Painter, works under the direction of the set designer and scenic charge artist to paint sets, backdrops, and some props for stage productions. The term is often used for theatre sets (other alternatives especially used in theatre are Scenographer or short Scenic), but I've seen it also in tv credits a lot, in different forms. So, let's see what terms we have/need:

  1. Scenic Artist [CREW] = Painter [ART] -> other alternative names: Scenic, Scenic Painter, Scenographer, Set Painter.
  2. Lead Painter [ART] = Key Scenic Artist [new suggestion] = Key Scenic [new suggestion] = Charge Scenic Artist [new suggestion] -> other alternative names: Chargehand Painter, Charge Artist, Head Scenic Artist, Head Scenic Painter, Head Set Painter, Lead Set Painter.
  3. Several specialized painter: Sign Painter [ART], Standby Painter [ART], CG Painter [VISUAL EFFECTS], Prosthetics Painter [new suggestion], Matte Painter [new suggestion].

As for choosing primary names: I like Scenic Artist for job 1 and Charge Scenic Artist for job 2 the best. And the spezialized painter under no. 3 should all be primary names, in my opinion.

That's all for today. whale

Best wishes,

janar

Me too! I added a temporary definition to Camera Loader, but I'll move it to Second Assistant Camera as long as it's an official job. I think we have to be VERY careful with the crew jobs, though. The 2nd assistant and the loader can be two different persons.

Bigger productions use more than 1 camera on set, so they have an Second Assistant "A" Camera, a Second Assistant "B" Camera and so on (similar to "A" Camera Operator vs. "B" Camera Operator as well as First Assistant "A" Camera vs. First Assistant "B" Camera).

I think it would be better to have A and B cameras. e.g. when someone is credited for both cameras, we can't add double credits! Oh, and I think I saw a "C" camera credit? thinking

Scenic Artist [CREW] = Painter [ART] -> other alternative names: Scenic, Scenic Painter, Scenographer, Set Painter.

I researched all of those the other day, but I'm still lost. I think Scenic Artist and Painter are different jobs. I'm also a bit unsure about Set Painter. It's all so confusing. Anyone knows painters? smile_cat Also, I think we're missing the "On-Set" ones.

I think it would be better to have A and B cameras. e.g. when someone is credited for both cameras, we can't add double credits! Oh, and I think I saw a "C" camera credit? 🤔

Isn't that the same as not adding personal makeup/hair etc?

(I remember suggesting A/B/C etc previously too though, but just wondering. There could be someone credited as XXX's make up, but also hair stylist general? I don't know if that ever happens, but in theory maybe it could? .. XD

I guess this is a somewhat similar case: a documentary series has a "Documentary Directed by" and a "Action Scenes Directed by" credit for each episode. I'm not really sure what I should do. thinking
