The Movie Database Support

I'm not sure how long ago TheTVDB implemented this feature, but I think it would be great if the primary image of an actor could be associated with what work is being viewed.

For example, Patrick Stewart on TNG and Blunt Talk: http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=71470&lid=7 http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=281181&lid=7

This would obviously require a lot of user work to find and upload per-movie images, but it would be so much nicer than Clint Eastwood looking old as hell when viewing https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/391-per-un-pugno-di-dollari

Cheers, Scott

Yeah, that would be so cool!!! Character posters :-D Also for animated work, it's so crazy/funny to see that a female voice is done by males, or the other way around, haha!

Yeah, exactly! I think it would look much better if https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/862-toy-story had pictures of the actual characters instead of the voice actors.

While I certainly see that this could work very well in some cases, I would not want to give up on the current image system. Therefore I assume this feature would have to be optional (seeing the actor/actress should be default in my opinion). And if it is something optional, is it worth investing a lot of time and effort into keeping such an enterprise going? I'm not sure.

The reason, I suspect, for people wanting the old Clint Eastwood image is that he is still alive. Still, nothing is stopping users from adding more of the younger Clint and vote those images up.

It's worth noting that with the current image system, character images are generally not much preferred. It's not part of our image rules, but if another good neutral image exists we usually delete the character ones (and here I mean the very obvious ones; neutral character images can be seen here and there).

Yeah, I was thinking actually it being on movie/tv level, a new section of images, character "profile images". And maybe link it to the person's image too, instead of a list of language, a list of the movies/series (if there are images for his/her characters)

One vote for this from me. I just realized that Trakt uses TheTVDB character images if they exist: https://trakt.tv/shows/penny-dreadful

Of course it would be movie and series level images. I would even suggest that images could be season specific. That would work great for long running series with same actors (X-Files, Twin Peaks or any series running for over a decade) or series like American Horror Story where actors have different roles on different seasons.

Just think how much cooler my avatar image would look in "Mennen tullen" actor images than the actors current profile image: https://www.themoviedb.org/person/576470-jukka-rasila

Those role images could be shown in actors own acting biography list. And series season list.

I would hate if that was the default. I can understand if you are fan of a series to see the characters, but otherwise I would just find it confusing. Also, if you haven't seen a series (or movie) showing images of the characters could be seen as spoilers.

(I know I sound negative, and I am, but I like the idea as an optional solution. :sunglasses: )

That kind of spoiling is already done with movie/series/season posters and backdrops. I'm very careful not to get spoiled and I understand that point of view. I never watch trailers, read rumours or watch upcoming season/episode infos. I want to feel the story from from the film or TV.

More suggestions: Actors normal profile pictures could show up on mouse hover. And perhaps the option not to show role images at all.

Did we talk about this before? I can't remember. It would be so cool with series, many release new characters posters each seasons.

That sounds like a LOT of work for Travis. But a basic new gallery of character posters + maybe season split + the old tagging system would be a good place to start. :speak_no_evil:

whenever i see an animated movie/tv show, i'd like to go to IMDb and see who voiced that character, not that character's image again, people know faces, not names, if you want character faces, why not do what IMDb did and create a swiki section for characters?

Also i'm glad Travis dropped the tagging idea, people don't realise how much data can be wasted when those 'tagged' images start loading themselves when you try to visit that actor's page, its one of the reasons i gave up this site and left last year, images range from 200kb-10mb, so if say that actor was tagged in 3 images all of which was over 2mb in size, that would be 6MB of data wasted and for those with slower internet speed like me, that page will never really completely load because the images would be trying to load instead of the filmography of the actor. I use IMDbPro because its actually very simple (no ads, no unnecessary images loading bar the small thumbnails for the filmography posters and one "profile" image), just the way Tmdb should be...Moving Tmdb to https has already slowed down the loading time for me, don't make it any slower :(

Wouldn't this introduce a whole new set of problems. Let's say eg. Family Guy, Seth MacFarlane voices multiple characters, one entry for each character would mean a total rework of the current system for cast and guest stars.

Yeah, then we should create a seperate cast member record for each different role (which I've always liked more Imo, it's not like it's alter egos like "Kara Danvers / Supergirl". There's never lots of regular cast members anyway (Okay, game of thrones and walking dead go to 20 or almost 30), but the animated series I've seen, have around 4/5 characters, and idol anime maybe 15. (iDOLM@STER franchise, LOL)

I have character pages in as part of the planned "universe" concept. I have no idea if we'll support images per character. I'll have to give that a thought when I approach that work. For now though, there is no immediate plans for character images (or more specifically, outside of universes).
