The Movie Database Support

Recently all RiffTrax movies have been deleted and a moderator claims they are not allowed here. This seems odd, so I'd like to ask why. It seems that at most they should be marked as video since it seems that the "Video" field is actually used as "Disallowed on Letterbox" anyway. I would argue that they are true movies though since they do have plots where a man lost in space watches bad movies with robots and other things happen while the movie is being played.

Anyway, the removal of so many movies here seems arbitrary and it causes users to be less enthusiastic about contributing.

Hi, the main reason has been that they are not proper movies. And even if we should treat them as proper movies we currently only supports one version of a movie. Any different editions, cuts or similar are not allowed at this time. And if we have to choose between the original version of a movie and the RiffTrax edit, we will always take the original version.

I would argue that they are true movies though since they do have plots where a man lost in space watches bad movies with robots and other things happen while the movie is being played.

This argument has been presented by many users in the past. However, I have investigated this and the original movies are such an integral part of the experience that it's very hard to see it as something other than edits of the original movie. It's also worth noting that many deleted entries were simple audio commentaries, not video, and that is something that never will be allowed.

Because of our policy about duplicate content, using the Video-designation is not an option. That's the same as if someone would want to add a director's cut or extended edition of a movie.

I hope I have explained how we are thinking here and that you and others stick around despite this disagreement. Thanks.

Unfortunately your thinking is completely incorrect in this instance and you have lost me as a contributor. I can't understand at all how someone can call these movies edits of the original.

I personally can't call them movies at all. If we allow that in the database, then there's something to be said about adding "react to" youtube videos as TV content too...

I can't understand at all how someone can call these movies edits of the original.

So please explain how an audio-file is an original movie. I don't think you can, which is why it's disappointing to see your reaction to what should be obvious. The video-edits are at least slightly more ambiguous, but still without the original movies these are nothing. It's possible that they can be added as a different version when we add support for multiple versions, but there would have to be a new discussion among moderators before that passes.

@Marr: Good point!

So please explain how an audio-file is an original movie.

This makes it clear to me that you haven't watched the movies as they're more than an audio-file. There's a whole other backstory going on and it's more than just audio-commentary. I would expect that when different versions of movies are allowed, that a RiffTrax version wouldn't be allowed as a "version" since it's not really a different version it's a whole other movie.

Marr, it's not a good point. If a "react to" tv show were made and aired on TV I would expect it to be allowed as TV content.

Closing the discussion is very passive aggressive and rude.

But thanks for cementing my decision that this website is not worth while.

I did watch movies that were just a simple audio track combined with the visuals and audio of the movie. Just like "watching" a commentary track on a DVD or Blu-Ray release. I know how most other versions appear and at no time do you not watch the movie itself. It seems to me that you are posturing about things you only think you know something about.

(Not to mention the audio downloads available from the Rifftrax website...)

(Edit: But needless to say, no matter what they are not allowed. And your own tone has been quite bad as well in this topic, which is why you get some stronger responses than what perhaps was needed.)
