The subtitles were added to differentiate itself from TESB and ROTJ. Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope is the correct title as of today. IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic all have it listed like the previous sentence.

A New Hope added as an alternative title. Snce the original was originally released as just 'Star Wars', it's correct.

It was originally called Star Wars in 1977. It was later changed by George Lucas to A New Hope. http://www.starwars.com/films/star-wars-episode-iv-a-new-hope
