At sixteen, Anna Wexler had broken away from her Orthodox Jewish community in New Jersey, rejecting its religious doctrine and social restrictions, and severing ties to her family. This led to her running away from home, sleeping on the streets, and experimenting with sex and drugs with friends who had also left the Orthodox world. However, after studying in Israel, her friends had a change of heart and returned to the fold. Feeling betrayed, Anna launches a quest to understand their transformation by following three rebellious Jewish teenagers in their yearlong rite-of-passage journey from high school to Israel. Along the way, Anna is forced back to the roots of her own struggle to understand the meaning of faith and the essence of religion and identity.

Asamura Kitaro (Ozawa Kazuyoshi), a young assistant head of the Toyukai, is known in Kabukicho as the one-eyed Kitaro, and is feared as a mad dog that will not stop once he loses his temper. Asamura is strong in fighting but not in making money, and together with his brother Matsuo, he forcibly takes on the business of the rival Nishinaga clan. The Nishinaga clan tries to take Asamura's sister, Yuna, a singer, hostage, but Asamura retaliates against them and kills many members of the clan. When Asamura is arrested for murder, his timing is so good that he begins to suspect a connection between the police and Nishinaga-gumi.

703AD, Byzantium. A peaceful farmer is accused of heresy and sentenced to 24 hours of mandatory prayer, locked in a medieval pillory. Due to an invasion in the area, the officials forget to release him. Alone in the middle of nowhere and unable to move, the farmer seeks help from a set of passers-by: a conservative family, an injured invader, a burning flock of sheep, a gang of children. As chances of survival become slimmer, the farmer needs to make peace with his impending death.

The year is 1983 and Yaakov Cohen, the owner of a Jerusalem printing press, is tired from being pushed around. It seems that he was born on the wrong side, with the wrong family name and in a moment's decision he decides to establish a Sephardic-ultra-Orthodox list that will run to the Jerusalem municipality. He gathers two friends, and together they improvise a campaign - no means, no connections, no money, but with much rage, passion and a sense of justice.
