In 2003, after recording The Deep End, Volume 1 (2001) and Volume 2 (2002), Gov't Mule gathered several musicians that had worked on the Deep End sessions as well as a few other friends for a live concert. This was intended as the culmination of the Deep End project, which was a tribute to their late bassist Allen Woody, who died in 2000. Two CD plus DVD set recorded live at the historic Deepest End Concert in New Orleans, LA on May 3rd, 2003. DVD includes 15 minutes of behind the scenes footage plus a photo gallery. Darío Higuera Meza, a 70-year-old saddle maker in Baja California, traveled 200 miles in 20 days by muleback, herding a pack train of donkeys all the way to La Paz. Overcoming health issues, rattlesnakes, and hot days on dusty, forgotten trails, he and his family carried a load of goat cheese, dates, sugarcane candy, and wine. They made this journey to honor the memory of los arrieros de las recuas, the muleteers of Baja’s donkey pack trains.

Back in 2008, Gov’t Mule played an epic three-hour gig at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre on Halloween night. The second set that evening saw the jam band performing a setlist comprised entirely of Pink Floyd covers. Now, as the first entry in a newly launched archival campaign, Gov’t Mule is releasing that memorable concert as a live covers album dubbed Dark Side of the Mule.

Dub Side Of The Mule was recorded at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on December 31, 2006. Warren Haynes and Co. were joined by a bevy of guests that night including John Popper, Gregg Allman and reggae legend Toots Hibbert.
