The first video in a forthcoming feature length suite of videos entitled “Singularity.” Singularity being “a hypothetical future point in time at which technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unforeseeable changes to human civilization.” (Wikipedia) Bright, flashy, fleeting and sonically dynamic, murmur as a standalone, is an experimental audio visual montage/collage rumination on the force of life.

In an ancient Redwood Forest, unsuspecting players are trapped in a treacherous Augmented Reality game, MURMUR, fighting for their survival in a brave, deadly new world. This isn’t the future. It’s now.

Donna has recently been convicted of “Driving While Impaired” and is ordered to perform community service at the local animal shelter. When an elderly dog is scheduled to be euthanized, Donna decides to take the dog home and quickly realizes his companionship can ease her loneliness. In a futile attempt to fill the emptiness she feels, Donna begins to take home more and more animals and she is soon in over her head.

Murmur was shot largely from a helicopter in the mountains near Banff. A double screen projection, it is a poetic and evocative work that cites a journey across an epic landscape. Using the sound of the heart to drive the viewer across this space, this work brings together a series of short vignettes in which we experience a series of non-linear and non- narrative moments. A paddle that cuts in and out of the surface water of a placid lake, a woman whose feet are washed in a basin, a hand being acupunctured, and different flora collected from across the western regions of Canada all become part of a sensorial experience in this beguiling and visually powerful work

A faint sound typically signaling disease or damage. A rumor. Sometimes the heart betrays you.

Murmur 1-8 is a SYZYGY avatar. It is a spirit of immersion and depths, signaling or ushering in a collapse between far outside and deep within. Our avatars were elemental.

Brussels was built on a swamp, today there is only one tiny part of Brussels that is still officially a swamp. Although continually threatened by development the area stayed intact largely due to being ensnared between two railroad tracks. Murmur is a collaboration between filmmaker Jan Locus and sound artist Stijn Demeulenaere. Just before first light, they recorded the dawn chorus. The city drone permeates the sound of the swamp, and a strange mix enfolds between the sound of an awakening nature and a human presence.

Evie doesn’t seem to talk very much, though we learn she communicates with everything - the plants, grass, water, TV static and the starlings that gather over the sea. As murmurations form, so awakens a sense of understanding, connection and acceptance between mother and daughter. Murmur is a story of beauty and awe, utilising the stunning spectacle of the murmuration, a sign of greatness, as a metaphor for Autism Advocacy.

Mei-li eventually ends up selling tickets in a movie theatre. A great camaraderie then builds up between the two cashiers in the small ticket booth.
