The life of Jerome Hill corresponded with the first formative decades of cinema and a greater part of the 20th century. Through fragments of Hill’s surrealistic, handpainted and documentary films (as well as the James J. Hill family's home movies), this autobiographical work serves as an aesthetically complete documentary of Jerome Hill as an artist and offers a personal perspective of the seventh art.

The "caminante" refers to a hobo who roams the countryside, a nomenclature preferred by Carlos, who once traveled all over Uruguay before becoming a homeless vagabond, or "bichiome", in the city of Montevideo. The film presents a portrait of society through the life of one marginalized individual.

This film utilizes a telephone answering machine as the basic structure. During the past year I kept all the messages recorded on this machine, and then asked many of my friends for permission to shoot a ten second filmic portrait of them, with the messages used as a soundtrack. The resulting work is this piece which becomes a statement of the modern society and our technology at work.

"Film Portrait of Richard Serra was shot during the making of The Camera: Je but I felt that the footage showed such complicity between Richard and me that I decided it was a film on its own. I shot the film title in 1977 but only finished the film in 2007 in digital video. Richard and I had met in Rome in 1972, and in January 1974 I moved into the building where he had lived and worked since the 1960s, so we were neighbors. We liked each other and the film shows that."
