In modern-day Helsinki, two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a karaoke bar. However, their path to happiness is beset by obstacles - from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and a charming stray dog.

A lonely 40 year old woman meets a man in the wood near the building where she works as a caretaker. They spend the night together. Early in the morning the police arrive at her flat. They just found a dead body in the woods.

Nobuko and five male friends graduate from a high school, promising to remain friends forever. One year later, Nobuko is working as a mediocre actress for TV commercials, and the five men are wearing beards and have formed a psychedelic rock band. One day, Nobuko meets Jun, who draws cartoons based on his experiences.

Lying quietly in a cine-camera, a film awaits to fulfill its responsibility of projecting 24 frames of images per second after exposure. Nonetheless, I prefer rolling out films outright and fiddling with them by pigments application, collage, scratch, cut-and-mix, etc. Since these are camera-less measures, the projection is unpredictable, surprising, and often so astonishing that I would be mesmerized.

Her parents are deeply ashamed. What did they do wrong? Beijing may look modern, but the traditional mores affecting women of all ages and classes are very old-fashioned. In Fallen Flowers Thick Leaves, women talk candidly about being married to a man they don’t love, about being lesbian and finding acceptance, about cautious feminism, and about those who – in utter desperation and shame at their failed love life – decide to become nuns. To what extent do ancient traditions, the Cultural Revolution and the modern economy affect the social status of modern Chinese women?

This anthology film comprises seven segments crafted by seven distinct Hong Kong-based filmmakers collaborating to offer a contemporary interpretation and tribute to the multifaceted aspects and diverse characters within this international city. Through numerous vignettes, the film embarks on an introspective journey, presenting unexpected narratives with unique flavors that showcase the mosaic of Hong Kong's vibrant identity and its many inhabitants. Captured through the lens of outsiders, the movie celebrates the city's undying spirit despite the current predicament of its existence, while keeping the local indie spirit alive.
