Laurie Anderson wrote in the program notes that the genesis of her new show, Songs and Stories from Moby Dick, was a proposed series about classic books for high school students. From this she created a multi-media piece based on Herman Melville's Moby Dick. In the production, Anderson emphasized Melville's writing (rambling sentences, lyrical poems, re-configured Biblical references, lapses of iambic pentameter) and narrative style (constant shifting of character voice) thereby revealing an epic tragedy worth rediscovery. Orphan Mary Katherine Gallagher, an ugly duckling at St. Monica High School, has a dream: to be kissed soulfully. She decides she can realize this dream if she becomes a superstar, so her prayers, her fantasies and her conversations with her only friend focus on achieving super-stardom.

Anja is a beautiful and very well proportioned high school senior... and still a virgin. She insists that she wants her first time to be with a guy, who knows what it's about. Her rich (and arrogant, pretentious and obnoxious) boyfriend Peter serves the purpose, and he's more than willing. In fact, he's pushing forward as much as he can, but Victor, a freshman who has a serious crush on Anja, has other plans. Her first time should definitely not be with this buffoon, and he's ready to take it VERY far!
