Scénář od Hanse Janowitze a Carla Mayera vytvořil typickou atmosféru filmu se zaměřením na chovance psychiatrických léčeben, na zmatek mezi pouťovými atrakcemi a na tajemné vraždy. Na výtvarné stránce filmu se podílela expresionistická skupina Der Sturm a základ tvoří deformované kulisy budov s ručně malovanými stíny a výrazné maskování herců.

Malá Martha je se svým otcem a sourozenci právě na cestě do Oregonu, vysněné země, kde bude práce a obživa pro celou jejich karavanu. Putování se ale zkomplikuje, když otec kvůli nehodě přijde k úrazu. Martha vidí přirozené řešení – řízení rodinného povozu převezme ona. Něco takového je ale pro předáka jejich karavany nemyslitelné, a tak se Martha tajně učí práci s lasem a jízdě na koni, aby trumfla jeho syna, který povoz dostane na starosti místo ní. Vzápětí je ale obviněna z účasti na krádeži vzácných předmětů a ztratí podporu členů karavany i své rodiny. Takové nespravedlnosti si však Martha rozhodně nenechá líbit a s odvahou se pouští na cestu očištění svého jména a vydobytí respektu, který jí přirozeně náleží.

Scenárista a režisér John Michael McDonagh se dal opět dohromady s Brendanem Gleesonem, hvězdou svého veleúspěšného režijního debutu, černé komedie s názvem Pomáhat a chránit. Tady Gleeson hraje tvrdohlavého irského kněze, kterému jeden z jeho farníků začne vyhrožovat smrtí. Film nabízí sarkasticky pojatou přehlídku maloměstských neřestí, která se nepozorovaně mění v truchlozpěv nad mravně pokleslým světem.
