A contemporary interpretation of the art of Baroque, inspired by the Italian painters of the period. Commissioned by Milan's Festival Delle Lettere and based on a letter about beauty, by Italian actor Vittorio Gassman.

Balkan Baroque is a real and imaginary biography of the Yugoslavian performance artist Marina Abramovic. Rather than a mechanical reproduction of the artist's work, the film tries to create a new reality by translating the performances into cinematographic images that intensify the fictional context of the film. Abramovic plays herself, but ,appearing in multiple forms, blurs her own identity. Memories and fantasies intermingle with day to day rituals. The chronological narrative often breaks to reflect the interior voyage of the protagonist from the present to the past and back to the present. The result is a visually impressive film. Balkan Baroque had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, 1999.

Yu Kuroha, a female detective from the Kanagawa PD Mobile Unit, discovers bodies of fourteen men and women frozen to death in a rental container. When the wills of the dead persons were found, her boss decides to treat the case as a simple group suicide. But Kuroha persists that they have to find the leader who assisted this mass murder. She finds out that the number of wills outnumbers the bodies by one. One person did not commit suicide…! Kuroha is a skilled sniper but also a delicate woman who takes refuge in cyberspace. The drama portrays her gaining maturity as a person and a detective by solving the mystery of a group suicide by standing against the mastermind of the case.

Gradually the real bodies break away from the constraints of their wooden models through increasingly improvised dance. A successful act of liberation from (Catholic) convention, which the material celebrates in an acstasy of multiple exposures and psychedelic colors.
