Scratched film with pyrotechnic effects.

The story of two friends who met on the eve of their fiftieth birthday: musician Astor Piazzolla and architect José Pons. They never imagined that their friendship would change their lives forever.

The city of Maribor before the Second World War, and Maribor after its liberation mark the period in which the film Cafe Astoria is set. The story relates with a gentle melancholy and a slight irony the lives of a middle-class family: the cafe owner, his wife and their son. Through their individual destinies we become acquainted with the social and historical background of a by-gone era; the social and national differences of pre-war Maribor, divisions among the wealthy and poor, and nationally minded Slovenes and fanatic Germanophils. The first year after the war introduced the absurd characteristic cruel measures of the so-called revolutionary social transformations in which calamity and coincidence intervene, resulting in events of comic nature, of course, as seen from a safe distance of fifty years.

An Iranian couple (Shohreh Aghdashloo, Mohsen Marzban) declare themselves political refugees after police detain them on their way to Cuba.

Three years after a traumatic event that changed her life Kelly, a young girl, returns to her hometown Kastoria and to her friends whom she has left behind. At the same time, a curious case of a hit-and-run accident, that had shaken the town, is opened once again.

Guitar virtuoso Steve Vai teams up with bassist Billy Sheehan, drummer Virgil Donati, guitarist Dave Weiner and keyboardist/guitarist Tony McAlpine for an amazing, one of a kind show at the Astoria in London.

The set list includes "What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)," "The Kids Are Back," "Like a Knife in the Back," "The Fire Still Burns," "I Wanna Rock" and, of course, the unforgettable anthem "We're Not Gonna Take It."

The Astor Battery became famous after the Spanish-American war and these young men are on display in this Edison short, which was shot on Saturday, January 21, 1899. We see a parade cross Broadway onto Union Square with the mounted police, the band and then the Astor Battery. The footage of this short is still in very good condition, which adds a lot considering how little footage is available of these men.

A taxi driver and aspiring actor is sent by his reckless agent to act in a sitcom pilot, shot by an amateur crew

It is 1996. A receptionist shows one of the suites in Hotel Astoria in Leipzig, in former East Germany. She expresses the hope that a “guardian angel” will still save Astoria from oblivion. Seven years after the fall of the wall, the curtain is also falling on the legendary hotel. Memories of this place, where extravagance was also on ration, are brought to life through a combination of archive footage and animation. We hear about the nuances and absurdities of life in the GDR, from turtle soup in a country known for scarcity to the hotel bar where prostitutes, tourists, and Stasi agents all hung out. These agents kept an eye on everything that happened; the paranoia that characterized the GDR era was just as present in the hotel. (Source: IDFA 2020)

This film, to be shot, edited, finished, and screened all within the dates of the First Look festival, is an open-ended homage to Wim Wenders's documentary Room 666. As in Wenders's original, visiting filmmakers, alone with a camera in a hotel room, will answer the question "Is cinema a dead language, an art which is already in the process of decline?" Participants will include an international selection of filmmakers visiting for First Look 2018.
