Det biografiske krigsdrama 'A Hidden Life' handler om den østrigske Franz Jägerstätter, der nægter at kæmpe for nazisterne under 2. Verdenskrig. Franz lever som bonde i landsbyen Radegund med sin kone og tre små døtre. Det er et simpelt og lykkeligt liv, men da krigen bryder ud, splintres idyllen. Den østrigske bonde kommer nemlig langsomt til den erkendelse, at han ikke kan støtte Hitlers sag. Alle omkring ham ved, at forræderi betyder skam, isolation og i værste fald døden. Men Franz’ samvittighed lader ham ikke hæve armen til et ”Heil Hitler”. Også selvom han har alt at leve for. 'A Hidden Life' er baseret på virkelighedens Jägerstätter, der i dag er et symbol for krigens samvittigheds-krigsbenægtere.
